meat and masters cycling

90 year old busted for doping- be careful where you get your meat. Good news- 90+ age group may be easier to dominate.

What would you do (bike theft)?

I was out for a walk on Saturday morning and passed an individual on the opposite side of the street awkwardly pulling a mountain bike with a missing front wheel. He did not look like a cyclist. Would you: 1. confront the individual and make a citizen's arrest (is being a Marshall for a bike event a...

I am skipping the rides until my order arrives from eBay: https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2917/14252302052_60f477f09b_b.jpg Here is some bed-time reading re. smoke and health effects. I see the Apple triathlon was cancelled over the weekend due to smoke. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC...

Re: Crash on Ash - deer collision

Too bad about the crash. Hope you have a quick recovery and are back on the road soon. Gordon Head is deer paradise- plenty of food and not a lot of traffic. I have skimmed by a deer by only a few feet 1/2 way down Ash hill on one of the Sunday rides doing over 40-50 kph and shudder to think of what...

Re: Big Loop Ride July 15th ... details please

I would like to give a huge thanks to the volunteers who gave up a beautiful Sunday supporting the ride. The food supply was excellent and I would not have survived without the frequent water stops (and rest) along the way. It was a ride to remember although my legs may disagree. I would also like t...

Canadian Canada Day ride

It has become a tradition for a Hurricane Ridge ride on July 1 for Victoria cyclists but is there any interest in a Canadian alternative? It would be an epic ride returning to Victoria before an evening BBQ, fireworks etc. There are a couple of hills on Saltspring Island but they are on gravel not s...

Re: Crash on the Sunday ride

We should be riding single file in smaller groups on the more treacherous sections of road such as Wallace past the stop sign to West Saanich road. These sections should be added to the ride details. Go for it the rest of the time.

Re: Thursday TTT pedestrian safety

Here are two simple suggestions. 1.Avoid dropping off the lead if a pedestrian may cross ahead in a crosswalk. Also alert riders behind there is a walker. The curve of the road and riders ahead can hide walkers especially to the right. 2. Alert any passing groups a pedestrian is ahead. They have a b...

Re: Thursday TTT pedestrian safety

Too often a pedestrian (usually wearing a hoodie and headphones) will be walking parallel to the street and turn abruptly without looking to cross. Perhaps it is time to find room for a bell on our handlebars. Would also be useful on the Goose or Lochside trails. You can actually find an aero bike b...

Many thanks to the volunteers for the races that went like clockwork. Even the music was appropriate- "Highway to Hell" by AC/DD was playing as the crash occurred.

Avoiding deer collisions- a modest proposal

I wish I thought of this myself. We all know deer are fascinated by the sight of an approaching bike or car and rarely will move out of harms way. We could adapt the method used by the Japanese Railway Technical Research Institute (adapted to save some weight): http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ20...
