Major Construction Work on Observatory Road
The National Research Council of Canada will be carrying out major road repair work at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, 5071 West Saanich Road, in Saanich, BC.
The work is to rebuild a retaining wall at the side of the main Observatory Road, replacing one that was washed away last year by heavy rains. Temporary repairs were made at the time, but a complete rebuild is needed to conform to current construction codes and to ensure safe site access for the long term.
Construction will begin in late September and is planned to last 3 ½ months, though it may take somewhat longer. During the work, traffic will be reduced to a single lane at the affected area. Automated lights or arms – or, at times, flaggers – will be present and their indications must be respected at all times for your safety. If visiting the observatory site during construction, please adhere to posted speed limits and follow any directions from construction personnel.
During this period there will be excess noise due to the heavy equipment (large backhoes, dump trucks, generators, etc.) required to complete this essential work. Construction activities will be limited as far as possible to Monday to Friday, 7am – 5pm, but limited weekend work may be necessary if full road closures are required.
We regret the inconvenience and disruption this work will cause, and appreciate your understanding.
Please forward to all affected parties.
Thanks
