Last fall, the board set a goal of introducing a new kit design in 2022. We asked if newish Tripleshot member and accomplished Kwakwaka’wakw and Coast Salish artist Carey Newman would help. Carey had recently designed the orange jersey for our Ride to Remember on the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. He has also designed a National Team kit for Triathlon Canada and created a few public art pieces here in Victoria.

In the past, Tripleshot invited input into our kit design from club members, some of which was passionately delivered! This time around, we wanted to honour Carey’s gifts and let him work freely and with few parameters. To still allow for member input, we asked Carey to develop two designs so members could vote on which one they preferred.

Over the past eight months, Carey worked closely with club director Justine Johnson to create the first complete refresh of our look since 2018. Instead of requiring members to reject one design in favour of another, Carey developed a regular kit and one that he dubbed a “gravel” version. We loved both designs and thought the best way to give members a choice would be to make both available at the same time!

Carey’s comments on his regular kit design:
This design is meant to both acknowledge the Lekwungen speaking Peoples, upon whose traditional territories we ride, and pay homage to the history of Tripleshot Cycling Club. The purple camas flower is one we see on our rides and a source of sustenance for the First Nations up and down this island. The water surrounding it represents the island we live on and echoes the cog that has been a feature of Tripleshot branding for the last 10 years. The geometric mountains are indicative of the vistas we see and the mountains we climb, while the diamond shapes draw inspiration from the iconic argyle that has been a constant feature of the club’s kits going back to 2008.
And his thoughts on the gravel kit:
When I was designing the regular kit, I was thinking about ways to integrate the various elements from the previous jerseys. Also, looking at the geometrics of the camas flower, it struck me how the angles were reminiscent of spokes on a wheel. Although I really liked the design, it felt like it didn’t maintain the same connection to the history of Tripleshot, so instead, I started to imagine a gravel jersey that was related to, but distinctive from the regular one. Another idea that I really liked was the camas combined with the cog, but when I enlarged it on the jersey, it seemed too bold. Instead I put the wheel as the main design on the gravel jersey and put the cog on the sleeve. This way, the two kits tell the whole story of the past, present and (if members order these things) the future of Tripleshot.
We will post again soon with all the details of when and how to order your new kit.

We are grateful to Carey for sharing his talent, his skill, and his passion — and for his commitment to Tripleshot Cycling. We hope you enjoy the new kit and will join us in thanking him for our incredible new design.

Gilakas’la, Hayalthkin’geme!

– The Board –

About Carey Newman:

Carey’s traditional name is Hayalthkin’geme. He is a mutli-disciplinary Indigenous artist, master carver, filmmaker, author, and public speaker. Through his father, he is Kwakwak’awakw from the Kukwekum, Giiksam, and WaWalaby’ie clans of Northern Vancouver Island, and Coast Salish from Cheam of the Sto:lo Nation along the upper Fraser Valley. Through his mother, his ancestors are settlers of English, Irish, and Scottish heritage.

In his artistic practice, Carey strives to highlight Indigenous, social, and environmental issues as he examines the impacts of colonialism and capitalism, harnessing the power of material truth to unearth memory and trigger the necessary emotion to drive positive change. He is also interested in engaging with the community and incorporating innovative methods derived from traditional teachings and Indigenous worldviews into his process.

Carey was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 2017 and was named to the Order of British Columbia in 2018. He is the Impact Chair in Indigenous Art Practice at the University of Victoria.

Hide your wallets! The Jakroo store for our new kit is now open!

Find the store link on Spond and in the email sent to all members.

We are so excited for you to get your hands on Tripleshot’s amazing new kit, designed by our own Carey Newman.

As in past years, Jakroo offers us volume discounts, depending on how many members order a particular piece of kit. Jakroo is giving regular members a 20% discount as well as an extra 15% off using the code TRIPLESHOT15, in addition to any volume discounts. Serious discounts happen when we order more than six jerseys of a particular style (e.g. Gravel, Fondo, Regular Nova Pro etc.) so order early, order often. This will be our only order of 2022 so make sure you snag some fall/winter gear while you can!

Please note the Youth Kit is not available to order yet. A separate email will be sent to youth riders, coaches, and parents with instructions on how to order with a 40% discount later this week.

If you don’t have any kit from Jakroo, check out their sizing chart here: https://jakroo.com/fit-and-sizing

We’re working on providing you with a fit session where members can go to a local venue to try items on. We’ll let you know if one comes together.

The store will remain open until midnight, Wednesday, August 10. Production and shipping takes 3-4 weeks. We'll send out another email with pick-up instructions closer to the shipping date.

HUGE thank you again to Carey for his talent and inspiration, and the many other volunteers that helped pull this project together.

PS. Have you ordered your Tripleshot socks yet? Please place your sock orders using this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... ue&sd=true

Sock orders will close at the same time as the kit store. We’re hoping to coordinate the pickup of the socks with the new kit pickup so stay tuned for more details!

Are you still drooling over our amazing new kit but don't have any Jakroo kit and you're not sure what size will work for you? Are you hesitant to place an online order for kit you've never worn?

TRY ON a selection of Jakroo kit any time this week at our good friends Oak Bay Bikes - 1990 Oak Bay Avenue. Starting today Aug. 2 through this Friday, Aug. 5. Store hours: Tuesday - 10-5; Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday - 10-6

The kit store is only open for another eight days, closing on Wednesday, August 10. See Spond and your email for the kit store link. We expect a bunch of orders this weekend but the sooner you get yours in, the sooner we'll all know what volume discounts we'll enjoy. The magic number is 6 for many items.

Our next kit order will be in 2023, so make sure you can look sharp all winter. Don't hesitate and support the club today!

The 2022 kit store is now closed. A record number of members ordered kit, including 232 jerseys, 115 shorts/tights, and 51 jackets/vests. Even with our many volume discounts and the club discounts of 15/40%, our total order exceeds $40,000. We can’t wait to see Carey’s beautiful designs flooding Victoria’s roads and trails over the next few years!

Your pre-order on the Jakroo site should now be marked Pending Approval and your payment should go through soon once the final prices are determined. A note on the Vapor wind vests: Jakroo had several technical issues and this item periodically disappeared from our store over the past two weeks. If you ordered it, it should still appear in your pre-order but the price may not reflect the applicable volume discount. The adult vest was regular price $226 but we had over 30 orders, reducing it by 40% to $136 before applying the 15% club discount and adding tax. We should all end up paying only $129 for our adult wind vests.

The club made some strategic purchases of a few items and we have a small amount of stock to sell (see pic). We chose items that were near volume thresholds to ensure member orders could enjoy substantial volume discounts. You can find a dynamic (ie. up to date) spreadsheet of those items and instructions on how to order them at this link.

We are working through a few final design-proof issues with Jakroo. We expect production of the order to start this week and delivery around the beginning of September. The order will all be shipped to a member home (thank you Ron & Heidi!) where a small army of volunteers will sort and put your orders together for pickup. This will have collectively saved us over a thousand bucks! Stay tuned for pickup timing and location details.

We are so grateful to Carey Newman for sharing his gifts and giving us a new visual identity that acknowledges both the Indigenous Peoples on whose traditional territories we ride and Tripleshot’s heritage. To honour Carey (and with his input), the club will donate $1,000 to an Indigenous-led team in this year’s Tour de Cure cycling fundraiser. The funds will go towards improving the cancer experience for Indigenous patients and families while they are receiving care at BC Cancer. This includes direct supports for Indigenous cancer patients while they receive care, and working with Indigenous communities and artists to make cultural safety capital improvements to BC Cancer facilities.

Finally, a huge thank you again to board member Justine Johnson for the HUGE amount of hours she continues to put into this enormous undertaking!
