Erin and Sarah Race Nations Cup This Weekend!

Post by Lister Farrar »

Tripleshotters Sarah Van Dam and Erin Attwell have been selected for the national team this weekend at the Nations Cup, in Milton Ontario.

The Nations Cup is a series of three meets, Glasgow, Milton, and Cali, the only three meets that qualify riders and countries for the the World Championships in France in October.

Replacing the former World Cup, with only three chance to qualify for worlds, each meet is bigger and tougher competition.

Sarah and Erin will each ride team pursuit, Sarah on the A team, while Erin leads the B team after missing the selection meet with Covid. The Canadian track endurance team did not contest Glasgow in April, but the sprinters came away with several medals. Canadian Olympic gold medallist Kelsey Mitchell is one of the headliners of the meet.

Watch it live streamed here: https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2030299715957

Qualifying for pursuit is Thursday morning.

I’m going. Will post fanboy moments. :)

In the first round (actually the second ride), canada A rode against Australia, 4th qualifier. Canada (with Sarah one of the strongest,(and at only 20 years old) lead for the whole race, but their third rider cracked with 2 laps to go. The first two Canadians finished ahead of the Aussies, but the third and counting rider was behind. Tough result. They move to the bronze medal round.

The Canada B team with Erin beat Switzerland, and finished 6th overall, missing the medal round.

Canada A will race the US for the bronze, who have been slower throughout. But anything could happen.

Gutsy ride by both Americans and Canada for bronze. The lead was exchanged several times, and it looked to me like Sarah was the one pulling back time 2 or 3 times. But for the final lap and half, it was Sarah on the front, and she didn’t have much left to finally reel in the Americans.

Given the strength canada has in TWO teams I predict they’ll find the winning combination. Both teams average under 22, so lots of room to grow. 4th is not too shabby however you look at it.
