Bike Maintenance Fall Workshops

If you self-identify as anything other than an “Expert” when it comes to bike maintenance, these sessions are meant for You/Me!
We’ll start by getting beginners up to a level of familiarity and confidence to match what we’d call “intermediate”. Lets agree that “intermediate” means I’m not fast and I might make some rookie mistakes but I can mostly put a new tube in my tire, pump it up and also have a solid understanding of how to maintain my brakes and drivetrain. So we’ll get to practice on our own bikes and focus on these basic skills and our confidence — this one isn’t so much about speed as it is just general knowledge.
Next we’ll offer all the intermediates who are interested in gaining speed at these skills and explore some slightly more advanced maintenance items like shoe, cleat and pedal repair; bacon strips; patching a tube; measuring your chain wear, breaking it and replacing it; and keeping an eye on your brake wear - and replacing our brake pads … maybe one or two other items.
And finally, to get those of us who still want to, up to an “Advanced” level, we might do such things as:
- remove and deep clean our cassettes;
- using a torque wrench;
- service or replace our headsets;
- service or replace our bottom brackets;
- true a wheel;
- set our wheels up for tubeless; and
- bleed our hydraulic brakes.
And by no means is this where we need to stop. Still lots of room for those who are keen to invite more professionally qualified folks in to make a presentation to us about things we’d likely leave to the experts.
Not only can we drink a social beverage but we can also share discussions that further the ideas brought up by Mashby about establishing a tool lending program and maybe even a group purchasing program for some of our more common items like chains, lube, power links, brake pads and sealant …
I can and will be happy to organize and guide this but just fair warning, there will certainly come a time when I’ll need to lean on some other club members who have deeper skills and knowledge (eg. Damian P - Matt P - Mikael J just to name a few) and eventually the Pros who I’ve found very receptive to being lured over with promises of hop and barley flavoured beverages!!
So, if this sounds interesting to You (not asking for any commitment yet - and this will be 100% free), please add your name to one of the lists below (cut and paste as req’d) as You self-identify either as a Beginner - an Intermediate - or an Advanced.
Thanks for reading and your patience while we get this all sorted.
*Although these first Fall workshops will focus on Gravel/CX bikes, lots of carry over to road and if the interest is there, we could always organize a similar set of workshops in the spring to cater more specifically to the more common and more advanced road maintenance issues.*
BEGINNERS - interested in becoming Intermediates, please add your name below:
INTERMEDIATES - interested in becoming Advanced, please add your names below:
Once we get these groups moving then later we’ll advertise and collect names for the more challenging maintenance stuff.
For now, these sessions will likely have to be limited to 8 or 10 of us with our bikes at a time. And as mentioned on Spond, I’d really like to give first priority to current/past members of the board; anyone currently designated as a CX ride leader; and beginners. Cheers.

Great idea. I’d be happy to help coach/teach some folks at any level…
once you learn to do your own maintenance, you’ll find that you can own more bikes…

Awesome response All - thanks for the interest/encouragement.
I’m going to reach out to Spond Mgt and TS Exec just to make sure we’re covering our bases but hoping to have the events up for sign up on Spond in say 24 to 48 hours or so. Please watch for these and be ready to read the details as I’ll try to make some suggestions about what to bring, the address and where to park.
I’m also going to ask that when you sign up, tell us what 2 hour period in the proposed window is going to work best for You. Once everyone has added that bit, we’ll narrow our event window to the most popular 2 hour period.
As an example, in the evenings I’ll book the room from 5 pm to 9 pm but once you’ve signed up, tell me/us if your first choice is 5-7; 6-8; or 7-9pm. On the weekends, the options will be 1-3; 2-4; 3-5; or 4-6.
I can’t emphasize enough that these are designed to be YOUR/OUR sessions - so we only move ahead, Together - nobody gets dropped!
Bring your questions and enthusiasm as we collectively get our hands dirty with bike maintenance 1-OH-1!!
