Oct 27 180k gravel loop. Who’s in?

My buddy Markus created a gravel route that looks much like the last ride. We are planning on doing it oct 27. Anyone want to join?

Apparently beer and donuts grows on trees where we are planning on riding so hydration and fuelling is never an issue.

Possibly. I'll need more animated gifs and a cafe break down.

Then you’ll have to show me how to add gifs Ron. I’m discovering I’m a bit of a Luddite.

That's alright Rob. I've heard there is new fax to gif service that might be of interest to you.

As for cafes, the Kinsol Cafe at the northwest corner of Shawnigan lake could do. But I think you need at least two more.

In case anyone is wondering about the out and back bit on the loop. There is a break in the road and I want check if we could maybe connect to the Port Renfrew Main. (approx 100m hike a bike) Which would allow for even more epic routes in the future. That's a 20k out and back with a steep climb to go and check it out. (We can cut that out if you guys think that's a bit too much of exploring)

Hi guys
I did the route above on labour day long w/e (route above). The bridge on West Jordan Main at ~90 k on your route is out and that part of the road has been decommissioned. There is a bypass (new road) at ~77.6 on my route (Off of Kapoor main). This is a new logging road that connects back onto your route and is not on any maps or satellite views.
Hope this helps
Roxanne

Hi Rob,
This is another option if you want to go down to Port Renfrew:

One of the bridges on Lens was out when I wnt through but it was an easy down and up hike at low water.

By the way, it may be a little more than 100m to the old decommissioned suspension bridge that you are trying to reach.

If you end up doing the out and back bit I would consider it a personal favour if you stopped for a short rest halfway up the "South San Juan Mainline Road Climb" segment ;)

Cheers,
Mikael

Clearly local pro Rob Britton reads our forum and respects his elders, Mikael. Just 20 hours and 43 minutes after your Saturday night post above, he rode that segment. And he rode it a respectful 22 seconds slower than the reigning King of Sweden!

Of course, Rob may just have been a teeny bit tuckered out from his little jaunt on Saturday:

Here's how he finished his weekend yesterday:

A year ago this past weekend, Rob was in the breakaway that helped set up Canadian Michael Woods for 3rd place in the 2018 UCI World Championship. It's so cool to see what that kind of physical capacity can do in the backwoods of Vancouver Island!

Sorry, I missed that Rob set out on Thursday. The man is both inspiring and insane.

Given that a fair amount of this loop was off-road, I'd love to know his anti-chafing secrets.

Sorry to have hijacked your ride thread, RD. Back to planning your own ride... :)

Ok time to get this thread back on track. So far we have
Markus
Rob
Ron
Alan C

It will we at a tempo pace. No sprinting off the front and with 4 or more we have enough people to work together.

It’s bound to be a good epic. And yes Ron there will be tasty vittles

I checked. I got a response of incredulity for wanting to go on a day long ride the Sunday before Hallowe'en... best for me to stay out of the dog house so I'll have to pass. Very interested in a ride like this at a future date though.

I checked the weather forecast for the weekend and it looks good. I suggest that we meet up somewhere on the Goose. I believe the usual meetup is where Recyclistas is on the Goose at Uptown mall. We should try to maximize our daylight for the ride. Sunrise is at 7:50 and sunset is at 18:00. How does everybody feel about a 6:30am start? I'm assuming 20k per hr average tempo and 9 hrs total time.(optimistically :)

Hey Markus, it might just be the two of us but regardless I’ll be at recyclistas at 6.30. See you there.
