Olympic Adventure Trail: Ride Report

Mostly nonsense. Also riding bicycles inappropriate for off road terrain, off road; GIFs

Olympic Adventure Trail: Ride Report

Post by schouten »

Woohoo!!! This is an excellent and very CX friendly route to take; and without an ounce of hike-a-bike. It felt pretty remote at times and we only encountered a few people on the trail.

By the numbers:
  • 88km
  • 1,290m of elevation gain
  • 5hrs 26min in the saddle
The trails were almost all well-maintained, swoopy single track but nothing that would be considered technical - just super fun, grin-inducing, cross riding. The elevation gain was enjoyable too, with ample switch backs and rain forest to keep you distracted. The unintentional beauty of the ride came at Crescent Lake where we found the ultra-generic "Log Cabin Resort" and had access to fresh drinking water (supplies were dwindling), a general store (salty chips!), and even a fancy restaurant to order food (bonk fixing).

Instead of riding back the way we came, we opted to return along a nice smooth lakeside road as the trail riding pace was only 10km/h and we didn't want to sacrifice beer drinking time (Coyote Pub), but we could have re-joined the Adventure Trail at a few access point had we wanted to (recommended if highway shoulder riding ain't your thing).

All-in-all, a 10/10 ride that begs to be ridden again!!! Or even turned into a multi-day ride...

I am so jealous, O Bearded One. I am also worried that you might have catapulted us into a newer Cross Bracket.
Then the future of breathlessly trying to follow Rolf will be less than exhilarating? Hmmmm.... gotta rethink this new MAGA thing...

Thank you for organizing one of the best riding days I've ever had, Ron! The drinks and eats at the Port Angeles biker bar after the ride was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Thank you too, for the workmanly ride report, although we do like a little more spice here on the TS CX subforum. For example, you could have mentioned that at the biker bar, someone in our group (name rhymes with "Folly") airdropped her ride photos to someone called "Public" and ended up riding off on the back of a Harley. You could have also mentioned our the visit to your greatgrandfathers shrine where a kiss on the cheek brings forever good luck.

I’m sorry, but did you say “Folly” ended up riding away on the back of a Harley?

L3 (who’s still sleeping as of high tea, btw) didn’t divulge on THAT little detail. Spicy, indeed!

Oh Johnny, and to think I believed you when you reassured me " what happens in Port Angeles, stays in Port Angeles". How can I ever confide in you again?

Alan, we have just developed a new yard stick with which to measure rides against. It was that good. But I fear you may be correct and we are now forever ruined. But that's okay, 'cause nobody else rides cross anymore...

Greg, I'm glad to hear that L3 got tuckered out. I saw that JT did a ride this morning which confirms my suspicion he is not human. Rather some alien invention used to confuse lowly human cyclists; like passing me 10 metres from the summit of the 101!

JT, I'm happy to let you be the gravy to my mashed potatoes. Be the style to contrast the substance. Work your Blue Steel magic.

Ron, I agree with JT. You left out some of the spices. No mention of handcuffs or Farhang's banana?

Seriously, it was an awesome, epic and highly recommended ride. Kudos to Ron for initiating and planning it. He's glad I went along or his R.O.L.F. would still be in that biker bar.

My suggestions for the next one:

1. Bring lots of water.

2. Wear your best chamois. Its a lot of bouncing without suspension, smooth and buff trail or not.

3. Bring bear spray. We did see cougar scat.

I was good for 2/3.

4. When reaching for your iPhone, never put a banana in your mouth when Fargang is around.

Paul, there is no stereotype of a CXer. I'm quite a fancy lad, for example, and enjoy a spot of tea whenever I can.
