Goldstream Heights Sunday May 5

Post by Stéphane Tran »

Hi everyone,

It's time for a Goldstream Heights ride! The plan is to ride up the Malahat via Leigh Rd., around Shawnigan Lake and then up Goldstream Heights. The Mill Bay ferry or the Malahat are the options to return to Victoria. Everyone is welcome, but depending on the size and composition of the group we may divide up into "A" and "B" and maybe even "C" groups to accommodate everyone. 7:30am rollout on Sunday at the south side of the Selkirk Trestle (not the Switch Bridge).

I believe the Great Trail Ride is the day before, which may affect the length of your participant list.

Different crowds, Todd. Some people like to climb the Malahat to the murderous whine of highway tires, dodging rumble-strips and bits of glass/shell casings, just inches from jacked-up F-150 wing mirrors passing at 110 km/h. Others prefer to ascend amidst the crackling of crisp gravel and fizzing of velvety dirt, the colourful and amusing banter of a friend at one's side, and the wittering of tiny songbirds filling the lush, green, encircling forest.

(Actually, Goldstream Heights is an awesome, challenging road ride and I wish I could do both. :P )

The Selkirk Trestle is the large wooden bridge over the Gorge Waterway on the Galloping Goose. It is about 1km north of Caffe Fantastico/Fol Épi, or 5 minutes from the Switch Bridge heading towards downtown.

A great ride with some great company! For next time, I would recommend taking the south entrance to Shawnigan Lake, doing Goldstream Heights first before going to the Mill Bay ferry via Shawnigan Lake Rd. The descent into Mill Bay is way too sketchy.
