Hope everybody made it safely up and over Mount Tolmie ( or avoided it ). John, you passed us while descending the north side right near the patch of black ice that turned us back........ nice bike handling skills!
Roland, there won't be any ice next Wednesday.

Oops. If I had seen the ice I should have tried to warn you. I managed to miss it twice! I am sorry about that and my only excuse is that I was working hard trying to stay ahead of you. I should have known that something was awry when you did not catch me (again).

I rode very carefully down the south side. Anticipated rear wheel slip on the way up ... nothing, except right at that spot where I passed you. Steering to the right, bike still going left. Luckily, only for a second.

There was a decent crowd out this morning.
Can I suggest that we declare an official start time/place for Wednesday hills? Perhaps 6:05 at the base of Caddy Bay Hill? I know everyone does these at their own pace, but it's nice to be close enough to each other that people can ride to Tolmie as a group and maybe even go for coffee afterwards.
Open to alternative suggestions.

I think there's already an
official start time/place.

This is a great idea Martin. Thank you for taking the initiative on this.

The base at 6:05 am sounds good. When the numbers climb
, we might go back the the official meeting place (thanks Rolf). Something else that works is for people to adjust the 4-3-2 rule if they start early or get ahead... 4-4-2 anyone? We'll call it: 'Doing the Oldsmobile'

Rolf makes a good point. We have an official start time/place (Pareto, 6:05 rollout). Given that it takes 10 minutes to get from Pareto to the base of Caddy Bay Hill, could we agree on 6:15 at the base of the hill (for those who'd rather go there straight) and 6:05 rollout from Pareto (for traditionalists)? Wed Hills is a short ride so time shouldn't be an issue (compared to Tues/Fri rides).
Obviously, those who really want to go earlier should, but for the rest of us it would be nice to coordinate around a fixed start time. Sociability/competitive potential would be increased by having a mass of people riding roughly together. John did a third Tolmie this morning to keep me company as I did my first. I wouldn't have worked nearly so hard doing it solo.
Pure Vanilla's nice for coffee, and not too far away. Just sayin'.

Wednesday is a bit of an odd duck. Even when there's a crowd out, it's largely a solo endeavour. I do recall last summer/fall that a bunch would start roughly together and I definitely agree that being at the base of a hill with one or more others is a substantial motivator.
I noticed a while ago that the ride was so short I was returning from it while the rest of the house was still sleeping! Gathering at the base at 6:15 with the option of doing extras on Caddy for early birds is sound.
And potential coffee after? Now you're talking!

So long as Pure Vanilla isn't a sure thing, I'll never ride Wednesday hills.
What would be the point?

Sounds like Rolf would like to drum up more participants by offering to buy us coffee after the hills. That, Rolf, would be one way to ensure you'd have company at the table.
At least, I don't think the above was just a weak excuse for not doing a harder Wednesday ride. That would be so out of character.

FWIW, I have it on good authority that there will be at least one pre-dawn hillclimber in Caddy Bay in the morning. He or she may start early but hopes to find company at some point, and is willing to do extra reps on CBR as penance for being too early.

Gosh, it's been a whole year since we last discussed the hill ride.
Rather than reinvent the wheel or try to reclaim a long-retired starting place and time (Pareto at 6:05), I'll just ask the regulars - Steve S, John T, Barton, Christian... - what time do you actually start your first Caddy Bay hill?
With folks coming from hither and yon, with different ideas of what constitutes a satisfactory hill warm-up, it is reasonable to expect not everyone will do the commute/warm-up together. But, having company once business gets underway is desirable to most.
I've had a couple of dormant club members ask me about the logistics of this ride recently, so I'll pass along whatever helpful info is offered here in reply.
Thanks!

Hi Claire et al.,
Wednesday Hills is still a thing, but as mentioned above, the numbers vary. I usually ride straight to Caddy Bay and start at around 6:05 am. Sometimes there are people already on their first climb, sometimes a few show up later, sometimes I've completed the set alone. I'll add that I've been there approx. every other week. No doubt others in the club have done it alone recently to. My feeling at the moment is that I'll keep riding straight to the hill. It is very easy to adjust to new arrivals - adding a Caddy Bay climb puts us on the same 'schedule'. If the numbers increase (they probably will) I have no problem riding past Oak Bay High on the way, it just hasn't been worth it recently.
The 'normal' set includes 4 Caddy Bay Road climbs (from the stop sign at the bottom to the off-ramp/on-ramp at the top), 3 Sinclair climbs (includes about 200m beyond the crest of the hill to the road that goes into UVic res.), and then 2x Mt. Tolmie - You go up from Cedar Hill X (after riding through campus from Sinclair), ride down the backside of the mountain and then end with the climb to the top.
The great thing about this is that if it seems daunting, or too easy, just reduce or increase the number of climbs. It's not a 'no drop' ride. The 'group' usually breaks up on the very first climb, but that's OK - doing 3 instead of 4 Caddy Bays (2 instead of 3 Sinclairs) or only 1 Tolmie, puts you right back in there.
Pure Vanilla afterward.
