Trainer session with Jay Lamoureux

World cup gold medallist Jay Lamoureux will join the Tripleshot youth team for their trainer session this week, Thursday, 4:30-6:00, at Maria Montessori Academy, 1841 Fairburn Dr (near UVic and Mt Doug High school. There is space for other Tripleshot members to attend and sample the spin class lead by team personal trainer Nick Patenaude.

Maria Montessori has offered us some additional time if there's interest for an adult spin class session, and Nick Patenaude is available to lead Tuesdays 6-7, and Thursdays 6-7. If you are interested in this, this is a good time to see the facility, see what a world class pedalling style looks like, get Jay's autograph, and enjoy Nick's motivating banter. Not to mention some awesome TS youth riders laying down the watts.

Post if you want to come so we don't surprise the principal with a huge crowd.

Bring your own road bike and trainer. Sorry, no showers available.

Anyone going who has a spare trainer? I don't own one.

And while I'm at it, I know nothing about trainers. If I was thinking of getting one, what should I get? Assume that price is an issue.

I bought my CycleOps Fluid Trainer about 20 years ago and I've been very happy with it. CycleOps and Kinetic seem to be the most popular brands these days.

If you are only going to use the trainer in a room with lots of other trainers, you probably don't care about its noise level, but if you are going to use it at home, especially if you have upstairs/downstairs neighbours, then noise is an issue. Back when I bought mine, fluid trainers were quieter than magnetic trainers, but that was a few years ago...

Also, you might need to get a training skewer for your rear wheel, depending on how fancy/aero your skewers are. I got mine at Bicycleitis on Bay street from their parts bin for pretty cheap.

You'll want to get something to raise up your front wheel while you're on the trainer since your back wheel will be elevated. I forget what these things are called (riser, maybe?). Alternatively, you can use an old phone book if you can find one.

Finally, you will probably want to put an old tire on your back wheel so that you don't wear down your good tires from the friction on the trainer.

Even better, get a trainer tire (if you are doing regular indoor sessions. They are made of a different rubber compound (not really rubber at all) that does not wear off as easily. This prevents you from inhaling tiny particles of rubber dust, and your outdoor tires will last a lot longer :)

The recent Canadian Cyclist mag review what they consider the top five trainers.
