How to react when a deer crosses the road

Ah, so that's what we've all been doing wrong!

Bahahahaha! I actually saw this happen once (civilian vehicle). The deer was bounding toward the road and noticed the oncoming car too late, so tried to bounce over it. It almost made it, but the upper part of the windshield clipped it mid-bound and the deer got a lot more height before hitting the ground and running away. It also "appeared" unhurt, but I think a hurt deer full of adrenaline can run away pretty quickly!

Clearly, our deer didn't know it was supposed to jump, not ram. Last Thursday night at the ferry terminal.
