Cumberland Cross

Post by Fozzy »

Is anybody racing at Cumberland this weekend?
If so, does anybody have room for another person + bike please?

Tripleshot had great representation at yesterday's Cross on the Rock season opener, with a total of
29 racers (just over 10% of the total 263 registered racers - a record turnout).

There were several others who ride regularly with TS who rode under other team names as well.

It was a beautiful day by Comox Lake, not to be ruined by a gruelling course that opened with an unrideable climb, followed by a wild winding course through the campground, up and down several very sketchy gravelly roads, opening up onto a bouncing tube-testing run through the rocky beach, and finishing with a ride/run through the "sands of despair", capped off with a "hop" (crawl) over two barriers, before starting it all again (supposedly there was a flat section but I don't recall it - I think I blacked out on each lap as I tried to summon the will to complete another lap rather than dismount and kick over the lap counter that seemed perpetually stuck on "5 to go")...

While the main purpose of 'cross is to have fun, destroy the egos of your friends and hopefully get someone to give you a free beer later, Tripleshot was also well represented in the official results. All but two entrants finished their races (two young riders taken out by non-life/or season-threatening injuries), and there were several top end finishes.

In Super Masters (wisened and speedy), our own Lister Farrar finished 4th in a strong field that also included Jim Bear Pauly, who finished 10th (in a field of 15)

Last year's Intermediate Men's winner (at 13) Riley Pickrell was bumped up to Expert Men's this year. Riley finished in 28th, despite 2 flats and a broken derailleur hanger (in 3 different laps). Jo Fox bravely lent her bike to Riley for the final laps, and by all accounts that bike survived. Great perseverance Riley...

TS' Masters (unwisened version) showed moxy and grit, and great sportsmanship, allowing themselves to be lapped by the leaders while still finishing strong. Geoff Wong was not to be denied his 7th lap, and should get honourable mention for the effort (although deductions for counting).

The Intermediate Women had a small but strong representation, with Sarah Van Dam (age 14) coming in 4th, and Jo Fox outfoxing several much younger but slower women, to take the "lanterne rouge" award of Last Not-Lapped (and earning a growler for the extra effort).

In the Intermediate Men category, young Ethan Pauly continued a breakout year, coming in 5th overall, and 2nd among U-17 riders. Coach Bryson Bowers had a top 20 finish in his first ever official 'cross race, while Blair Phelps (on his new ride) finished top 25, and young Sage Parikh stuck it out to complete the race. (NB: Thomas Hill withdrew after one lap due to injury)

Beginner Women had great TS representation, all by U-15 girls. Toria Kalyniuk just edged Casey Garrison and Talia Hill, who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. Olivia Gribbon (7th), Megan Barnes (10th) and Jess Maitland (16th) rounded out the finishers. Nicely done, girls!

The Beginner Men also had great youth showing, as well as some new ... ahem ... mature Tripleshotters. Brand new TS Youth Team rider Ryan Wakelin showed his pedigree by destroying the field to take 1st place nearly a minute ahead of the next rider...we likely will see young Ryan riding with Intermediates soon, I think. Media darling Jack Boden took 4th place, likely missing a podium spot due to a premature "celly" (celebration for those under 16) with Lister, just getting passed as he took time to hi-five and sign autographs at the finish line... Griffen Hart had a great ride, coming in 7th, with youth riderd Aedan Fellman-Crocker (14th), Tomas Kalyniuk (21st) and Trevor Macfarlane (26th) finishing as well. Dad and mature rider Darrell Barnes worked hard to fiinish in 11th spot as well.

So the next race is in 2 weeks (Sept. 27) at Ladysmith... hope to see all these riders and a few more (?) then!
