Tripleshot Cycling

Has anyone come across this, and if so, what is the problem?

I was coming down Spartan today, straight down, didn't hit anything and the bead of my tire jumped the rim of my wheel. Fairly newish wheels (ultegra) and tire (schwalbe). Tube inflated to 100psi. It looked like I had inserted a tire lever into the tire and jumped the bead over the rim. No damage to the tire, tube or wheel. I rode it back to the shop and asked them if they had ever seen something like this and if there was an issue with the tire, rim, tube. He took a good look at it, took it apart and remarked that everything seemed fine.

Googling this didn't bring anything up. So wondering if anyone has done this before, knows the mechanism/ knows how to avoid it? Its a bit disconcerting when your tire comes loose at speed.

I think that happened to Eric Simonson a few weeks back on the sunday social ride. I'm not positive...but I think he said that his tire had partially popped off the rim.

Buy some continental Grand Prix 4000 25mm. They a more comfortable and a lot of the pros are riding 25 mm tires with no difference in roll resistance. Plus the conti tires are hard to get on so having them spontaneously bulge like the schwalbe will be next to impossible.

One reason why the tire may have bulged a bit is because it may not have been seated correctly. I had my kids tire do that when I inflated it quickly. I had to make sure that the line above the bead was equidistance from the rim edge. Start at about 15 psi and visually check both side. Then up it to 60 psi and do the same. Then 100 psi.

( I'd buy some continentals tho)
