Minutes from TS Exec Meeting - 05/01/2012

Post by John D »

Minutes from TS Exec Meeting, Jan 05, 2012, 6:45am at Cook St. Moka House.
In attendance: Peter, Lister, Geoff, Bill, Jen, Dave S, John D

1. John D was appointed Secretary to take minutes.

2. Cycling BC update (Peter): TS is now listed as an official “club” on the CBC website. As of today only 32 members have registered for 2012.

3. Financial Update (Bill): Nothing new to report. No funds spent since Xmas.

3a. TS Rental Equipment: TS will allocate $500 this year towards new club equipment to be rented to members on a cost-recovery basis. The first two purchases will be (i) a travel case and (ii) a bike rack that can accept almost any type of bike and could go on most types of car. Individuals will be invited to donate other equipment to a TS “rental pool”.

3b. Status of the TS event tents (Bill). Target is to replace the tents by March 01 for the beginning of race season. Tents will be equipped with a removable TS banner that can be attached at race events.

4. Race Team Update:

4a. Juniors (Lister): Lots of info on the recent Burnaby track camp is provided on the TS Forum.

4b. Women (Jen and Peter): TS is exploring ways to encourage more girls/women to come out. Possibilities include an across-club co-operative to ride as a race team (e.g. for trips to the mainland or WA, etc). Lister to organize a pre-Bastion Square training program to be marketed to the community at large.

4c. Seniors: VCL calendar (for Mar-Sep) should be finalized by the end of the month. Will include a series of 6-8 “Island” races and a couple of stage-races. Plans for an “official” TS race team are still coming together. The race team will help mentor emerging TS juniors and create a place for individuals within the broader TS membership who just want to develop their racing skills.

5. Speakers Series (Peter): First session is already well subscribed. Plan is to schedule similar events every 6 weeks or so.

6. Proposal for a Russ Hays Elite Team (Peter): TS will not support the RH proposal and will focus instead on activities of wider benefit to the local cycling community.

7. Sponsorship: Should be finalized by the end of January in time for a February order of a revised black TS kit.

9. Other Business: Lister to circulate a “long term athlete development” document to see how TS can best support for senior rider development.

10. Next Meeting: Jan 19th. Main agenda item will be the budget.

Hi Exec. Thanks for the minutes. I was wondering, is the black kit going to become the new official kit of Tripleshot? Is this a decision by the executive or will the membership at large have any input?
Will there be a baby blue order?

Thank you.

Hi Executive. It seems from the minutes that the black race kit is going to become the official kit of TS. Is this correct? If that is the proposal, can the membership at large have some say in this decision? The last time someone else dressed me without asking was my mother in Grade 1!!

Can we have a say in the kit if the club is moving to just one colour? Or can we order both baby blue and black? The black is nice but there is just so much black kit out there by other teams/groups. The baby blue with splashes of pink is just so distinctive and recognizable and very visible in traffic. Allowing the members to have a voice in this decision might be nice.

Just my thoughts!

Thanks!

Hi Barton. I have the asked the exec to respond. Will get back to you.

Besides the visibility and distinctiveness issue, what do think of one vs two kits?

My personal view is that as a coach of juniors it's a waste of money to ask them to buy both.

And we don't have the same presence at races as if we had the same colours on. Uniforms, are, well, by definition uniform .

Personally, I would prefer to go back to the original argyle uniform, but that would put almost everyone on the spot to buy new, or have even more un-uniformity (ack, it's even getting hard to talk about...).

My sense is that more people ordered black than blue. So we picked that one, so at least one of the uniforms would not be obsolete (vs a new one.)

If there's another way to look at it, I'm open.

I am curious about the 'official' race team idea. I like the idea of planning ahead and maybe that's all 'official' means. But I discourage you from generating a list of names - it has the potential to discourage people (not on the list) who want to show up from time to time and it might put pressure on those who join the list to a) show up even when they have other commitments and b) perform well. Lastly, if the club supports the official race team financially, those not on the list who end up racing a lot, might feel left out.

What was the Russ Hayes proposal? We live and shop all over town, so I see the logic of not aligning ourselves with one vendor, but it would be nice to have seen the plan. Perhaps a chat at coffee if it's not something we/they want posted on the forum?

I think we've kept away so far from a designated or selected team, but want to offer race team-like services, such as the performance seminars and maybe guest ride coaches. And no doubt each category will continue to hatch team work plans with those that want to. More thinking to do on this. Maybe each category could nominate a captain and survey those interested in racing and see what they want. It's not going to be anyone offering free training plans, making your travel plans for you, and quarterbacking team tactics. But it could be some guest elite riders dropping in to run tactical practice, or following riders around in training races to give tips.

Russ Hays essentially wanted (a large amount) of cash to fund their elite team. Couldn't see how we could do that. Flattering I guess that they thought we had that kind of money. (It wasn't a discount-for-members kind of proposal.)

Just had another thought as the AM caffeine kicked in. At least one club of masters in Vancouver I know of through a friend who supplies their uniforms, has at least three kits. But they designate them for certain purposes. Eg. white lycra ONLY on dry days, etc. :)

But could we avoid this whole debate if we picked one colour as the race kit and had alternatives for those who don't want to be dressed by others for training, cafe reclinage, traffic stopping etc? Not saying it has to be the black one for racing, tho there's some logic to that given the history. It's less prone to staining in race conditions too.

Everybody wants to wear something other than the one kit ALL the time. This way we get our name out there on the alternative too.

look forward to more discussion of kit design and choices

I know Geoff has put a tonne of time into this and especially the sponsorship component. Would be of assistance if someone volunteered ( computer skills and a bulldogedness) to assist with ordering, payments and distribution???

just a thought about spreading the load

cheers
