Aerodynamics of real world bicycles

Post by Lister Farrar »

Saw this article in bicycle quarterly, (vol 6 # 1 fall 07), an alternative to the consumer magazines at Fairfield. The article reported on wind tunnel testing of bikes with riders, with fenders, bags, different positions and clothes.

Their conclusion: "We found that more than anything else, frontal area, which is determined almost entirely by rider position and clothing, affects a bicycles aerodynamics."

Tidbits:
  • Going from hoods to drops saves 7% drag.
Full tuck reduces drag 38% (!)
Lowering stem 2 cm saves 5%
Tight fitting jacket (vs snug jersey) adds 4% (And you thought I took my jacket off 'cause I was hot! )
    Loose jacket adds 12%
Fenders and mud flap (except for Eric's ;)) may actually reduce drag, but results not statistically significant.
So maybe yogo lessons for flexibility are more significant than fancy wheels? (And I thought Brian was doing yoga (thx galen) to meet women...)

Maybe a diet for a skinsuit most of all? I hear there are now suits for masters with "control zones".

On another note, I saw that Oakley made a specific time trial sunglass for Cancellera with a higher top, so he can see from a lower position.

What's next, trimming eyebrows to see under them better?

I knew fenders were good for more than just keeping your gear clean. The mudflap was also for training though. I plan to bring out the fenderless racer one of these days but I guess I'll have to ride on the drops if my back can take it. Or maybe just wear a skinsuit.....
Cheers,
Eric

Good article on flexibility and position.

For me, hamstring flexibility is key to comfort, especially in a low position. Also, back flexibility.
