Garmin-Cervelo has posted tons of TdF stage data downloads to Garmin Connect. Like this one, ouch: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/99279353
And this one, ouch ouch: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/102426972 - Vande Velde finished 12th on that stage. Average was 32.4 km/h despite finishing 2300 metres higher than they started and over 5,000 metres of total climbing, including doing about 12 km/h for 40 minutes up the horrific Colle dell'Agnello, which goes 9 km at 10% average, with several kicks to 12%-14% for a few hundred metres at a time. Vande Velde was saying yesterday on Twit-twatter that he had recently been talking about old 6-day races with his grandmother and great-uncle. I asked him if he knew about 6-day legend Torchy Peden from his buddy Ryder's home town. He said they were talking about Torchy but he didn't know he was Canadian, let alone from Victoria.

Do you have any idea how awesome that is? He's either Gretzky or Orr, take your pick. He may have been a foul-mouthed son-of-a-button, but he's one of the all-time greats. Probably Peden, Lovell, Bauer, then the rest in Canadian cycling.

My grandmother always told me the Peden's were pretty good athletes, it wasn't until recently that I looked him up. Yeah I know how great that is.

I like the fact that the nickname 'Torchy' stuck because of his bright red hair.
