LET’S DO COWICHAN!

The organizers of the Nanaimo2Victoria Charity Ride are extremely disappointed to announce that we are unable to host this event in 2011. Despite four very successful years running the event we were unfortunately unable to obtain the necessary police support to allow the roads to be closed and keep you safe. There was a tremendous amount of work put in to attempting to secure the necessary police resources but at the end of the day it was simply not possible.

HOWEVER, the good news is that we have an EVEN BETTER route planned for the same day! We are super pumped to announce the first Victoria2Cowichan ride! On August 28 at 7 am heading out from the Oak Bay Bikes shop at the Westshore Mall we ride the 150kms to Lake Cowichan where we will be treated to a big feed! The ride will be fully supported and there will be no lead vehicles controlling your speed – that is all on you! Buses will then transport everyone, once they are feeling fat and happy with a belly full of barbeque, back to the Westshore…. unless you make your own arrangements otherwise.

While the roads will NOT be closed and all traffic rules must be followed we are very confident that those who enjoyed the N2V ride will enjoy the even greater challenge of Vic2Cow! Look for further details on the website as we finalize the route. All persons currently registered are invited to transfer their registration but in the event that you don’t wish to “Ride the Cow” we will fully refund your $.

Finally we would like to remind everyone that every dollar raised by you is delivered directly to the BC Cancer Agency locally. We aren’t professional fundraisers etc and feel that all the bucks you bring in should be used to beat the big C.

Anyway we really hope to have you along, and look forward to another awesome ride!

The V2C Team (formerly the N2V team!)

Been there done that...about, hmm, three weeks ago. Even got the T-shirt.

By coincidence, I signed up for N2V about an hour before Peter posted the message saying that they'd changed the route. I had also planned on doing the northward TS V2N leg this year, but this puts the kibosh on that plan.

However...depending on how early we start, we could just continue on after Lake Cowichan through to Duncan-Shawnigan-Malahat-Victoria. The only real hard bit after Lake Cowichan is the climb back to the highway out of Shawnigan, and it's not too bad. Total distance would be 270k, but without any support for the final 120km...unless of course Dave's plan to procure a support vehicle could be put into play. If we had a slow vehicle following behind us it would make the Malahat descent a lot safer, as we could take the whole road at the point where it narrows to one southbound lane.

Any takers? Several people have mentioned to me that they'd like to do the Vancouver Island Gran Fondo next year...so why wait?

John

Hey Peter, was riding Renfrew Rd. yesterday and think it will be an AWESOME route. Something the organizing committee may want to consider - South Lake Shore Road, which is the road from Renfrew Rd. to downtown L. Cowichan, is very narrow, and very rough. There is a lot of traffic on that road, especially on the weekends when you get the campers, etc. travelling back and forth. There is no shoulder and as I say, the road is in bad repair. It will be dangerous having so many cyclists travelling that road at once. I'm scared riding it alone! You could easily end the ride at the ball park, which is essentially at the intersection of Renfrew Rd. and Lake Shore Rd. There's tons of space there for a big celebration afterward. Not sure if you need any approvals though. Will ride the whole route out and back to Renfrew on Sunday and report back.
