Report:
Oliver is a nice little place to go. I had a hotel on the lake - very scenic. Cyndi dropped me off then carried on to Trail to visit a friend of hers for the weekend. I then realize that the lake that I am staying at is not the same lake that I am racing at - hmmm - So, I have to cycle about 30 minutes to the race with my gear strapped to my back EARLY in the morning. Note to self - do not wear the wetsuit while riding the bike - it is hot and people look at you very strangely.
Swim - 2km - 39' - 2nd swim since IMC last August. Went well - for some reason when I mentioned my swim history to the people around me they all backed away seemingly afraid that I was going to drown them - though that may have been the floral bathing cap I was wearing. Long (800m) run from the beach to the transition area over cement roads and paths - it is always good to cry when you can pretend it is just excess water from the swim.
Bike - 93km - avg 34kmh - nice rolling 2 1/2 loop course. One unkind (13%) short climb done twice. Bit of a headwind (both ways - how is that possible?). Felt strong on the bike passed a fair few people and was not passed by many.
Run - 21.1km - Terrible run - very ill over the first 1/2 - became familiar with each of the porta-johns on the course. Then settled down. Negative split run but that is only because the first half was so horrific. Slowest 1/2 marathon I have ever run. Run course was nice and varied including some gravel trails and pathways beside a river.
Overall Time was 5h36'14"
Goal was to try and get an IMC spot for this year. Secondary goal was to finish before the rain started.
Achieved secondary goal but missed out on a spot at IMC
That likely has more to do with not training properly (even for me) that anything else.
This would be a great race to go to with a group of Tripleshotters next year. (Quentin, Barton, Brian S., Dolly) The hotel has a private lake just outside of town (in case I forgot to mention that part) with its own boats, dock, BBQ pit. It would be a great weekend of fun with a little race thrown in.
