school league race

Ride of the day goes to Adam who crashed, derailed his chain, had to put it back on, and chase. I noticed he was chasing, and closing, and that the rest of the oak bay/TS boys seemed to have slowed it down. I thought, 'wow, that's TS team work, blocking for Adam'.

Adam caught back up to the front group after a terrific chase, then got second in the sprint. After the race I went to congratulate the boys for thinking of Adam, and they all looked at me like I was nuts. "Blocking? We didn't know where he was until you told us he was 8 seconds off the back." So Adam managed to chase back from a half lap deficit and then finish second. Awesome.

Brian won, and Liam was third, after about 6 rides total since Christmas. (Oi y vey, that's a testimonial to soccer and track fitness) Matteo was 5th, after pulling for much of the race. Duncan had trouble getting his foot in at the start, but gamely chased for the whole race, trying to get Bow to come with him when he caught her. And Bow had the victory salute of the day. Link to come.

Tip of the hat to the Comox boys though, who also rode the cat 4 race in the morning.

What we learned.
  • The cornering theory worked.
When someone tries to push in, don't necessarily let them.
We need race winning tactics now, not just survival tactics. If we had had a plan to alternate attacks, Oak Bay/TS could have got away cleanly.
But we also thought it was ok to have modest goals, and meet them, than sky high ones and miss them. Time to step up though.
This kind of racing is "fun".
We need to practice basic things like getting clipped in the pedal

Wow. From half a lap back to 2nd? That's nuts, Adam. Way to go Brian and Bow.

Bow: do that over the finish line next time in the baby blues and you'll make the TSC homepage for sure!

Speaking of jerseys... Hey Coach, got any extra Oak Bay greens for muffin-topped alumni? I'd be very happy to subsidize the OBH Cycling Team if I could wear the green & white. :D

Good race, I had fun and I felt way more confident on the corners.
Again, we lacked some strategy.
Brian and I pulled for most of the race, but nobody tried to break away.
The pace was quite slow, it seemed like nothing was going to happen until the very end, so we saved energy.
Apparently I didn't save enough though...
