What can I say? It was fast. The 50-59 age group saw about 18-20 riders toe the line. The course was "scenic". While there were hills I was never out of my big chain ring. The 10k of chip seal was rough, rough, rough. I can't imagine the cobblestones in Europe. The race was 75kms. I finished in 2:01 with an average speed of 37.2 kmh. To be honest I just was able to hang onto the pack until km 65 were 4 of us got unhooked form the pack. Quite the experience. Al raced in the 40-49 group and will, I am sure, provide his take on the day. I am looking forward to the next race opportunity. Got to get a team uni....

Yes, definitely hard. Pace was fast from the start but settled somewhat as people burned off the pre-race jitters. It actually wasn't too bad and started to think I'd be able to stay with the group for the duration. Then the 30's group came roaring past, everyone jumped on and the pace shot up. Average speed jumped accordingly and when I looked down and saw 38.9km/h average, I knew I was doomed. Sure enough, by the end of lap 3 I was off the back. I managed to catch fellow solo riders on laps 4 and 5 and our little trio crossed the line together. Elapsed time for me was 2:07 with an average speed of 35.4km/h. Needless to say, I slept well last night.
Next race is the Maple Bay/Cobble Hill 68k RR on June 6. For those who partake in the Saturday hammerfest, this is a fitting replacement and guaranteed to get the blood flowing.
