I count 15 signed up. Weather and those-who-don't-"forum" will adjust the numbers up and down a bit. But we're still likely to be too big for one crew (15 was way too much last Wednesday!) So, thanks for agreeing to lead a second group as needed, Claire!

Leaving very close to 6, avoiding foot-downs, and cutting things short in the event of mechanicals will all be necessary to reach Shoal Point before the roadies leave. But it should be a great ol' ride, with fast bits, muddy bits, and hopefully some new tracks for all of us.

If anyone else is looking for a less ambitious cross ride from OBHS, please consider posting a new thread... I'm sure there will be others who are keen, and someone with a route idea.

Thanks all for a fun (and very wet) rip this morning! No mechanicals or crashes, consistently fun pace, very few foot-downs, new terrain, an unexpected river, and we made Shoal Point for 7:25—five minutes early!

Much gratitude to Claire for learning every turn perfectly and leading a separate group. (Looking at the Flyby, you guys were much more faithful to my plotaroute than we were!)

With 16 at the start, I still think splitting the groups was essential for flow—but I'm keen to hear what others think. It was understandably awkward when we tried to split at the gas station: nobody likes that feeling of "picking teams at recess", and there was intentionally no A/B split to help us self-seed. I know I'd always rather ride with each of you, than split up! And I know some of you wanted to stay as one group.

But even if all riders in a big group are up for the pace, the front of the ride still needs to slow or stop and do occasional counts to avoid dropping anyone due to navigation or mechanical issues. In a group of 10 or 12+, this causes a ripple effect that screws up everyone's flow experience. (There's lots of interesting research on phantom traffic jams, that may be applicable.)

So please post any thoughts you have about your experience this morning and about splitting in general.

I thought the splitting worked swimmingly, literally and figuratively.

The reviews have it that Claire led the second group through Rolf's predetermined route like a champ, and it was fun crossing paths with them here and there. 

The feedback on Rolf's leadership was little more mixed, especially as concerns his blistering pace.

This was our glorious leader after making us chase him like whipped mules...

I thought splitting was a great idea and had a ton of fun...Thanks to Rolf for devising the route and Claire for leading our pack. As it turns out....Cross is a wee little bit of fun!
