Yes, from the top of Mountain Highway the road up the back of Grouse is fire road - all gravel and as you get to the ski hill section it is very rough. Definitely not something you want to do on a road bike.
You could make your way from Mountain Highway across to Grouse through the high neighbourhoods - I can assist in a route if you like. Less vertical than the fire road but a very enjoyable ride through mostly quiet neighbourhoods.

Hey Geoff if you would map that out on Strava that would be great. Thank you.
Barton.

I'm so in...depending on cost. Is as an independent or the race?

I gave this a try. Have a look at the link and see if it works. It starts at the bottom of Mountain Highway and Keith Road and takes you up to the Grouse parking lot.

Hi Geoff. Looks Great! I'll modify the strava thing I did. Thanks.
Julie, this is not a race or an event. Just a day on the bike, and on the ferries! Cost will include a bit of gas money, your food, ferry (+-$20 for walk on and bike each way), and most importantly beer at the end before the return ferry ride back to Nanaimo.

Revised route:

Take a look and let me know of any necessary modifications. I tried to keep the route off of major highways as much as possible. Input most welcome!
Barton.

Thanks Barton. No beer, thanks to my head injury, I live in a drunken state (I'm a teetotaler).
What's the rollout time, etcetera. It might be too long of day (delerium)

What's the plan for catching the 1st ferry out of Nanaimo?
- get up real early to catch the ferry or plans to stay in Nanaimo the night before?

Not too bad to get the 6:20am ferry by leaving Victoria at 5:00am sharp. We just need to get everyone coordinated in advance with the various cars/riders if car pooling together. I would gladly assist with cash for gas and parking (also payable with beer credit). I could even ride to the meeting point if that helps.

People should feel free to head to Nanaimo the night before (carpooling arrangements can be made on this thread). I'll just drive up that morning. Probably makes sense to have everyone meet at a central location.
Alpha Starbucks, 4:55am, with a 5:00am rollout?
I can drive and I can fit three bikes (that includes mine) on my rack. So I can take 2 people besides me. If someone can lend me a 2-bike roof rack attachable to Thule crossbars, I could take up to 4 people besides me, though it would be snug.
Post if you can drive and let us know your capacity.

If I make it, I can drive and can take 3 others.
Won't know until closer to the time unfortunately because of family commitments..

I can drive. I have room for two bikes on the roof (me + 1), and potentially a 3rd bike in the trunk
(I drive a VW Golf Sportwagen).

Hey folks. We're still planning to do this ride, so if you plan to come, speak up and note whether or not you can drive (fill out the post above this and repost with your name and info added).
A reminder that this is *not* a supported ride. Everyone will have to supply their own nutrition, hydration, tubes, sunscreen, etc. This ain't no swanky BLR! However, we will do stops along the way to replenish at local commercial establishments so no need to carry a 5 litre Camelbak.
Weather looks great for Sunday (high in the low-mid 20s, mix of sun and cloud).
Do post soon if you're not listed on the post above (even if you're just a strong "maybe"), so we can get a final rider count and figure out transportation logistics soon. People turning up unannounced at the last minute might find there's not room in a car for them. Also, people planning to meet us in Vancouver should pipe up so we can coordinate the meetup.
Ciao!
Martin
