Lister,

A little feedback - I enjoy the ride a lot and prefer the 5-5-5 over the 7-5-3, but the reason I'm there only half the time is I also enjoy the Friday ride and have been doing the Saturday sufferfest. Three days in a row just adds to the pain of trying to keep up to Josh & gang, so I've been alternating Thursday and Friday rides. If the ride was a Monday ride...............

Don't change the day! I may make a greater effort to be there more regularly (not this week; I have an appt with Barb BB Physio Thursday early!). I would like to see things mixed up a bit, working different parts of the body and the brain. Maybe even throw in a bit of individual tt putting us in our own private pain locker?

Super. I'll bring Trivial Pursuit cards; cuz doing Sudoku on a bike would just be dangerous.

I rode Wed. Thurs. Fri. last week and was pretty wrecked all weekend—mostly due to Thursday's pain. But I'll never complain about having ride options seven days a week. Long live TTTTTs!

Big engine? I think its more like a wind-up toy that needs a few turns of UVic circle drive to work again.

6 sharp at Henderson and circle drive at the pull out.

Two-up reps were very interesting last week, I would recommend them again. Last week Andrew and I tinkered with the speed and length of pulls as we played cat and mouse (Quintana and Hesjedal?) with Dylan and Mike. Once we got the pulls down in length, and up in speed, they were toast i tell you, toast. Hope they don't read this. Looking forward to a rematch.

Warm and sunny tomorrow.

Like how you feel ALL DAY after you do TTT intervals from 6-7. :)

For new riders, welcome, and note that this is a strictly no drop ride- ya dance with who brung ya.

If your group feels a bit fast, sit on the back. This will not be a reflection on your work ethic, but of your charm and intelligence at saving yourself, while your team motorpaces you to coffee time glory.

If it feels a bit slow, pull longer, not a whole bunch faster.

But most of all talk to your team mates and explore what's faster for the team. Usually its shorter faster turns, but don't assume. Discuss.

Nick Lowe had it right for training partners; you have to be 'cruel to be kind...in the right measure'. http://youtu.be/b0l3QWUXVho

And where can you count on friendly folks to hurt you in the nicest possible way? You got it. TS TTT day. Tomorrow 6am sharp, ring road and Henderson at the pullout. :)

Ride report. 16 or so riders out being 'kind' to each other. Dylan R, Chris f, Chris M positively showered me in kindness.

Awesome workout though. Especially in the two up rep when Chris F got the scent of prey, and opened the throttle on the rise to catch dylan and chris m, thinking we were done. Then, like the ferry tower PA telling you you're in the wrong lane, a voice from behind (Rob H) intones 'one to go'. Had to ride that one on wobbly legs and willpower.

Also, Peter needs to hear if we're interested in the tt and Ttt at Duncan. Please post.

Teams we found out about today:
  • Mandy, Michelle, Michelle's sister (sorry don't know her name yet), plus one more.
Victoria Academy of Cycling has a u15 team of three, looking for one more which might be one of our u15's.

More?

Get sleek, get fast. Bring your tt bike or aero bars and see what it does for your lap times.

TTT intervals Thursday 6 am, sharp, Henderson and ring road.

For those interested, I suggest we do one of the intervals solo, so get the feel for the TT you're all doing Sunday the 6th, right? ;)

But first interval or last? How about we let a new rider decide?

Sorry this is so late, but I'm hoping some night owl/early bird will see and let the group know. I'm away and getting access intermittently. Could one of the regulars call the meeting of threshold thrashing to order and help make up teams if folks don't know with whom to ride?

Also, Peter L will be there a bit late and you can ask him about the Ttt Sunday.

Any more teams for Sunday? Looks like a u15 team is going. Gonna let some 13 year olds show you up?

A couple of thoughts on TTT pulls.

I was asked by one regular, how long should turns on the front be? And another regular provided probably the best answer.

The length of turn should be how long you can maintain or very gently increase the speed of the team. If the team is slowing down, you're pulling too long or not fast enough.

This also works from a "i wanna workout" perspective. Your team could just all do 30 second pulls, which would get you 1/4 of the workout time. But then there's a risk you're twiddling your thumbs (and legs) on the back waiting for your turn.

There's a better way, from both a racing skill and a workout perspective. Ideally, you should just barely be recovered in time for your next pull. That means going pretty hard on the front, definitely over your threshold (individual tt pace). Leave just enough energy to get back on the back, and then gradually recover until its time to pull again. If you're recovered well before its time to pull again, you either didn't pull fast enough or long enough, or your team-mates aren't going fast enough. A clue is often in the speed of the team.

You can judge speed by feel, but its a bit difficult, because when you hit the front, the wind is stronger and you're pushing harder, even to keep the same speed. So it might be a good idea to get a speedometer and watch it during your ttt effort to make sure you're not slowing down, or almost as bad, speeding it up too much.

So back to that question, how long should turns be? Anywhere from 0 seconds (yep, pull off with the leader before you, if its going to be too much to keep up the speed), or as much as 30 seconds or more. It is feasible for someone like Jay to do 1-2 minute pulls to my 10 second pulls. Someone that strong has to be pretty sensitive to weaker riders to keep them with them, but will still be faster than they would be alone.

Probably the most difficult aspect of adjusting turn length is advising a team mate. The speedometer helps. But you can also comment when the turns and speed are right, vs pointing out a correction. Failing that, a rider with a speedometer can call out "slowing" if a leader is underestimating the speed.

And speed isn't an absolute measure of appropriate effort and pull length. On the descent of our ring road course and subsequent climb, speed changes a lot. And it's affected by the rider. A bigger rider can (and should) go pretty hard downhill, while a smaller rider may have to take it easy on the climb.

The real answer is practice and open discussion. See ya next Thursday. :)
