Advice sought on CX bike

Post by Paula »

My partner (who is a big guy) is buying a CX bike and has spoken with tons of people at different shops in town.. so he might already have too much information, and everyone has an opinion.. but what the heck.. I thought I would ask folks at TSC.

particulars-
Used for:
- recreation/exercise use
- commuter and pulling a trail-a-bike

So far leaning towards Kona Jake the Snake

Kona's tend to be good value for money, and the Jake the Snake is no exception. A solid bike for a decent price. The offerings from all the major brands in the same price point should all be fairly similar. I'd go with whichever Victoria bike shop is offering the best deal at the time.

The Jake does come with a 46 tooth big chain ring, which he may want to get swapped for a 50 if he going to be spending more time on the road than on dirt. And get the tires swapped for something a little more commuter friendly.

+1. I agree with Roland. When I was helping Brian E buy a bike, the Kona seemed the best deal, and that's what he got, tho' size was his main criteria (6'5"). Russ Hays had them in the fall. But there were similar bikes in other stores. Fairfield had a nice one last week around that price point, a Devinci I think. (Might have been a triple which you probably don't want; mine is slow shifting compared to doubles, and the compact crank (ie smaller iner chainring) on most of these bikes gives you a pretty low gear.)

Keep the 'cross tires though; he'll want those for his 'cross career next fall. Budget for fenders and shoes. MEC has a nice off-road shoe with a buckle for $99 that will work for road and 'cross, and save you from shredding your booties in the winter; it has a bit of a heel.
