USGP of Cyclocross

Post by Roland »

16 cross races in 12 weeks (23 if you count the Wednesday nighters). I'm a little burnt out. Finished off the season with the USGP of cyclocross in Portland, OR. 44th the first day, 21st the second. It was cold, windy and in places the course was covered in 12 inches of peanut butter style mud. I need to register earlier next year, my callup was around 60th both days. Still, it was a good way to wrap up the season.

In in there somewhere on the right, 5 rows back:

Cyclocross is self seeding in Oregon. Men B is supposed to be equal to Cat 3, but I think it's a bit weaker since Cat 4s race up to get a 40 minutes race instead of a 30 minute race.

US Nationals are coming up in Bend, so all the top US Cyclocrossers were in town. We only watched the elite race on Saturday, but it was pretty amazing. It started with a 500m road section. The acceleration of the line is mind blowing. They must have been doing 50+km/h by the time they hit the grass.

The power and the skill of the top guys impressive, but I'd to think we made the course easier for them by packing down tracks through the mud.

Trebon ended up ripping his derailleur off, threw his bike, then kicked it and walked off in disgust. I think he was running Top 3 at the time.

Chris Horner was racing as well, not much of a bike handler, but he could put the power down when it straightened out.
