Coaching Course this fall

Post by Lister Farrar »

TS is trying to arrange a coaching certification course this fall. The level of certification is called "Introduction to Competition", in the new context-based system (ie the 'where you coach', system rather than levels 1 2 or 3 etc. old system.)

It will be three or four weekends; we're hoping for Friday PM and Saturday so it's not all weekend, but TBA.

So far, Peter L, me, Ryan Calbick, and Glenowyn Carlsen are interested in taking it. It's suitable for active coaches to get certification or a refresher, riders interested in learning more about competition, or parents looking to guide their children. There are no pre-requisites I know of. There will be homework and assignments to qualify for the certification. (There is a more novice -rider oriented course called Community Initiation, but all TS's are past this level already.)

The learning facilitator will probably be Steve Lund, former assistant national coach, national centre coach, coach of the Victoria Cycling Academy, and of many national championship medalists and national team members.

The course includes both theoretical aspects of coaching such as training planning, technical aspects of coaching and two practical sessions, road and mtb. There are four parts, and you can take any or all of the parts, in case you have a part from before, or just have time for 1 or 2. Of course it would be easier for us if you took them all.

Cost is TBA. We've applied for a grant to cover part of the costs, but don't know if we'll get it until November. Also the ~$1600 in fixed costs will be divided up among the participants. If we get 20, it wil be cheap, if we get 5 it will cost more. If we get the grant, less. Guess (for now) about $150-200 for all four parts if we get 10 participants.

Post here if you are interested, and if any weekends don't work for you.

Hi Lister,

Thanks for taking the lead on this. I am still interested and would probably find it best to do the courses on a Friday evening and all day Saturday. Of course I would like to do them all but money is a limiting factor for me at the moment.

Hi Lister,

I'm somewhat interested. I took the Level 1 technical way back, but never went further. How does the new program work? Is my L1 technical useless, now or?

You keep credit for old courses, but are encouraged to update, as far as I know. My CAC transcript shows both my old levels 1 and 2, and the new community initiation course I took.

The main difference is the competency focus of the new courses. They get you to show what you know how to do, vs what you know. So we'll all get chances to run a drill and make session plans I expect.

Dates are set, location TBA, possibly PISE. All those who indicated an interest, please confirm here that you can make the dates.
  • Saturday Nov 27, 9 AM- 5 PM, Training Basics (Part A), intro and start to
home study portion of course (this will require some homework!)

Sunday Nov 28, 9 AM-12.30 PM, MTB and Road skills and tactics indoor portion. 1.30-4 PM on Bike Portion, Road

Monday Nov 29 finish Training Basics

Sat Dec 4, 1.30-4 PM on Bike Portion, MTB
Cost depends on whether we get the grant we applied for. Assuming we don't get it, it will be about $125 if we get 10 participants, less if we have more, more if we have less.

*Plus manual printing costs; anyone wanna prevail on the 'community support' component of their office photocopy budget?

I'm still in...but...

It looks like just Brad (maybe) and me. Would this mean $625 each? If so, I'm out. How long until you find out about the grant?

Are there any other members that would be interested?

I have noticed that many TSers have young children. Did you know that very few schools have a cycling coach? When your kids get to middle or secondary school, wouldn't it be cool to step up and coach your school's bike team? It's tons o' fun, and the kids love it. Plant the seed!

Also, I believe the dates would be: 27,28,29.

And we have a copy machine that has a very low per page cost. I may be able to get support from my admin. for a small run.

Thanks Eric. The dates were wrong in the email I received, and I managed to get them worng again! Corrected above.

The names I have interested are Peter, Lister, Eric S, Glenowyn, Ryan, Brad, Mike Peters, Geoff Pendrel, (It would be worth taking the course just to be around him during the mtb stuff; he's a national downhill coach), plus one or two from Steve's coaching academy who are getting their certfication, and I haven't called the other clubs yet.

I'm with Brad on this one; I'm in if we hit the minimum participant number of 5.

Just found out today Tripleshot did not get the Coaching Association of Canada club grant we applied for. So it will be on the fees we pay.

Please consider signing up to help keep the cost down per person. And maybe call an interested friend. It will be a fun weekend +, talking about cycling and riding bikes, with fellow cycling nuts. What's not to like? :D

Got another one, Scott Mitchell from Procity. Scott's keen to be in the course with Geoff Pendrel, and the two will no doubt make sure we cover downhill.

Also, I think I have Ryan, Peter, Me, Brad, Glen (1/2 the course?), and Eric, which makes 7.5. Sound right everyone? Still more calls to make.

We have 8, but three can't attend all parts, and it doesn't appear there is flexibility to take parts later as I understood earlier. But if we lose the 3, it's still the five minimum that two other participants said they could manage (up to $200).

Costs are $1000/participants= $125-$200.

Watch here for info as it is available.

Participant Bios:
• Geoff Pendrel, national downhill coach, trainer of school bike club coaches, Endless Biking instructor
• *Scott Mitchell, organizer of downhill events, SIMBS President, and Trek ProCity partner
• *Peter Lawless, Tripleshot Cycling President, coach of multiple Paralympic medallists and NCCP theory instructor
• Eric Simonson, high school physics teacher, school club coach and parent of an up and coming mountain biker
• *Glenowyn Carlson, head coach Margaret Jenkins Elementary school bike club and all rounder- she races dh, xc, cx, road, and track (I think).
• Lister Farrar, high school coach, high school league race director
• Liz Flawse, MEC cycling program coach and EMJS coach.
• Brad Head, software architect, business owner, entrepreneur, cycling nut, previous President of Atomic Racing Club, have taken L1 technical coaching course, looking to support cycling in elementary schools... expand to Frank Hobbs where son 8 and daughter 6 attend
• Ryan Calbick (to come)
* can't attend all sessions

Ok, we're a go with 9 Saturday. We have a work-around for the three that can't make a part. More welcome though!

Where else will you get to hang out with this kind of cycling brain trust? International level coaches who are also devoted to community level development, elementary school to Olympic and paralympic medalists, and just good ole riding buddies. Tell me you can stay away!

Got one more, Jon Bouchard has a kinisiology BA and a MA in sport psych, who interned with an Ottawa mountain bike team. He works at MEC with Liz Flawse, a former Margaret Jenkins coach who rounded him up.

Price is now down to $100.
