Garneau Cross bike, for someone around 5'11" $475
Good basic bike for cyclocross and winter riding. Low mileage, fender and rack eyelets, Sora level components. Needs brakes, budget about $50 to $100 more.

Didn't work, try this.
Also, I'm 6' and ride a 54cm Cannondale cross, Logan is 6'1" and rides a 56cm Ridley, so this may be good for a taller rider.

Thanks. You're probably right Eric. The seat does look low in the picture.
But the top tube is only 56, which is the more important measure. Also, it looks like a pretty level top tube; are yours and Logan's sloping a bit?

Level, but you're right, the top tube measurement vary dramatically on cross bikes. Definitely need a test ride before committing (hard to do on a bike with no brakes).

How long a top tube does your frame have Adam? Eric? Just looking for an idea how short this is. My bikes are all 59.5, but I do have calouses on my knuckles where they drag on the ground.
Measured horizontal, centre to centre? Like this:

Hello,
I have been commuting on a "hybrid" Mountain bike for a couple of years now (Interurban-west saanich-wallace) and would like to get an entry level road bike to try out. I find that I ride my mountain bike like a road bike, so it only makes sense to get one. Would this be something that would work for what i'm looking for? I am 5ft 11.

Probably too big, unless you're long legged and short bodied. See the sizes used by other 6' guys above.

I'm fairly log legged, and seem to prefer riding my current bike on the taller side. I think it might be worth checking out. From a practicality standpoint, would it work as a daily commuter bike (bare in mind, i know nothing about road bikes...)

"Log legged"? That about accurately sums up my general conditioning as well, adz.
I don't know much about cross bikes, except that they look like hardier and more practical than your average brittle road bike. However, I regularly commute on the same steel road bike I use for group rides and have no practical complaints.
I should add that I don't have panniers, never wear a backpack, commute only on roads and I'm accustomed to wearing skintight, colourful lycra costumes when I ride.
