Re: Mt. Seymour Challenge
I was waiting to see the final results before I posted something, but it's taking way too long! If Bruce and I had stuck around for a few minutes afterward we would have found out, but we didn't want to risk missing the ferry.
The hill climb was quite the experience. I've read that the mind blocks out the memory of traumatic experiences, which is probably why I don't remember most of the actual race. What I do remember is rain, thick fog, and punishment. Lots and lots of punishment.
There were probably 20-30 starters in the Men's Cat 1/2/3. We started off quick, and guys started falling off after the first kilometre or two. I was determined to not pop off and suffer the climb alone. However, I knew I was losing ground on the lead guys. Fortunately for me, the pack split and I was able to hang with the second group, which included Ralph Lalumiere from Russ Hays and Steve Grandy from Glotman-Simpson.
Ralph eventually fell off, which surprised me, and I was left with Steve, who happened to know who I was even though we'd never met. Turns out we had emailed each other regarding a TTT team for WarpSpeed back in May.
Anyway, he tried pulling away from me a few times but I stuck with him. After his last attempt, he got more conciliatory and said we should work together to stay away from the rider who was gaining on us. Steve realized this mystery rider was a Cat 2, so we stopped caring if he caught us, but he blew up so it didn't matter. Steve even had the decency to tell me he was still going to sprint for the finish.
Well, sprint we did after 12 km, 40 minutes and an elevation gain of 890 metres. He ended up beating me by half a wheel.
The fog added a cool/sinister aspect to the race; those left behind would gradually disappear into the murk and be lost forever. Similarly, the next group wasn't that far ahead of us, but we could only get a glimpse at times so bridging up seemed a lot more daunting.
Bruce had a great race; he managed to make the first break and finished ahead of me.

Re: Mt. Seymour Challenge
Results are finally up!

Bruce did great, finishing third among the cat 3s. Looks as if I finished sixth or seventh (the rankings are a bit confusing).
