Metchosin Road Race Volunteers

Post by Plawless »

This is the second of 2 races hosted by our club. Course map here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/BC ... nt-Road-RR

We get some $ from it as well as get to give back to the community by putting on a quality event. In light of the recent discussions about how our members can benefit from the funds we raise generally perhaps here is a good example of how our members can contribute.....

We still need a few volunteers to help at corners and the finish line and to keep the lap count straight.

Currently we have the following volunteers:

Dave S (repeat volunteer)
Al W (repeat volunteer)
Sarah (repeat volunteer)
Michael L
Rita
Paul
Marcus
Peter L (repeat volunteer)
Kim G (Race organizer)

I note that we seem to have a high proportion of "repeat volunteers" which means that the same people are doing lots for the club - including sacrificing their chance to race so that others can participate....... hmmmmmm. I find that a little "strange" given the recent posts not only showing how big our club is (nearly 70 paid members) but speaking of how we as members can contribute etc.........

Thanks Roland.

everyone else - I see that Roland is stepping up and he is a fellow that not only runs our forum but has taken on the thankless job of organizing our last 2 gear orders AND is arranging TSC waterbottles....basically yet another repeat volunteer.........

I'm still trying to see if I can get out there to volunteer as well.

Speaking for all those Ts'ers out there in my situation:
These things can be very tough to swing with 2 kids, one of which is 6 months old. It's not for a lack of desire to help out.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

D'ya think it might be a good idea to post a reminder of the date and time? If I can't find it on the first page of the forums, chances are others can't either.

Sorry, Pete et al. Josh sums up my situation nicely; my homelife restricts me to weekday morning rides these days, period. Though as an added challenge, I'm up in Parksville eating Cheezies on the beach for the week.

I'm a little frustrated I've missed both club-hosted events this year as I'm a willing volunteer. Guess I'll have to show my commitment to TSC another way. Perhaps an argyle tattoo?

Hey Kim,
when would you like the volunteers to be out there? Is 11am good enough?

Who's interested in riding out together? Meet at 10am (or earlier if required) at the Switch bridge?

Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine 8)

If my knees feel better by Sunday I hope to race. Any other TSC members toeing the line in the 50-59 age group? If I can't race I will attend to volunteer wherever needed. It will be a game time decision.

Rita: Peter told me Volunteers meet at Hans Helgesen School (5015 Rocky Point Rd) at 11:15. We will assign corners to people onsite but the basic role is being a directional marshall at a corner.

I think I'll ride out. The switch at ten should leave extra time.

Peter,

Unfortunately I have to change my volunteer status to tentative.

I spent yesterday in bed with a cold courtesy of my kids. Today is worse. Tomorrow is unlikely to be any better.

Will try and make it out if I feel up to it.

Hey Marcus,

thanks for the info and great to hear that you'll ride out too. Since last time we rode out that way there was a bit of confusion going on, I'll suggest a different (scenic, but steep) route for tomorrow.
1. Go out along the Goose 'til Island Highway
2. Go down to Ocean Blvd (bridge is closed for cars, but open for bicycles)
3. Go up Lagoon Rd (apparently very steep) to join Metchosin Rd
4. Follow Metchosin Rd, turn onto Happy Valley Rd and turn onto Rocky Point Rd.

Does this sound good to whoever wants to ride out?

Peter,

Still out of commission, so won't make it out to help. Hope all goes well.
