Fender ideas

Post by Lister Farrar »

Amy had fenders on today, and I noticed Oak Bay Bike's Brent had put on a neat two part bolt/nut thing that holds the brake on the frame. The interesting part is the brake nut is threaded on the back to accept another bolt to hold a fender. It means you can take fenders on and off without touching the brake attachment.

On another note, there were a couple of rubbing fenders today. Some ways to deal with this are:

Use fenders that don't go under the brake. Like these: http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_deta ... 5853554994

But they don't come with flaps, so get creative (some TS'rs make personal statements with their creative combinations of plastic bottle, tape, leather, lexan and zap straps), or order these:

I will offer to do a group order and install these. Post a reply below. $5

Another trick is take the rear fender over rather than under the brake bridge. Or cut the fender, use something thinner under the bridge and and rivet the two halves of the fender onto the connecting piece under the brake.

Or buy a cross bike with room.

Front: Freddy Fender clip on from MEC.

Back: full fender cut off at the rear brake. The end is held in place with a bracket that goes over the brake, similar to the pic below.

I would be in for one of those fenders attachments. Although my composite plastic/popsicle/duct tape crap flap has held together for months, these looks much sturdier. I would encourage everyone that has questionable crap flaps to pick this up as many fenders in our group sway around at speed with an oscillating spray effect.

I'm in for a pair too Lister - my cut bottles have done the trick for a while, but it would be nice to have something a little more solid in place. The bottle halves tend to sway back and forth when I'm out of the saddle and intermittently spray the person behind me.

I should fix it once and for all with these!
@#$& this 'work' stuff, I think I'll just go pro...

I'm in for a pair too, please. It's a great idea to organize these as even though we are well into summer, it doesn't seem like the weather god has realized it yet.

Another option for crap flaps is the scraps bin at Industrial Plastics. I got a bunch of stuff for about a dollar. Couple holes and a zip tie and you're good to go. In fact, if anyone wants a couple pieces I still have some left-overs.

Spoke to Planet bike. Flaps are out of stock right now, but in stock by the end of the month. Time to add your order here. $5 a pair, plus any additonal charges that happen.

Put me down for a set of crapflaps too please.

My current crapflap consists of 3 long wobbly pieces of duct tape (it's the thought that counts right?), constructed during my lunch break on June 1 when I realized my duct tape & egg carton flap had vanished.

What's the deal with needing fenders in June anyway? When is it going to stop raining?
