Sidney and Paskin Cowichan Time Trials- tell them you’re coming

Post by Lister Farrar »

Sidney Velo does an outstanding job running time trials weekly at Sidney and a longer one in summer in the Cowichan valley.

It might be our only racing with humans, along with time trials at the velodrome. Let them know if you can come. They need to know as it’s quite an expense and there are relatively few dates left to recoup costs. They’re super safe, cheap, friendly and great motivation to train.

Subject: Sidney Velo Time Trials This Summer?
Importance: High

Hi, time trial riders and volunteers. Under the BC Government’s Return to Sport plan, individual time trials will be permitted this summer, provided that they are conducted according to Covid-19 safety guidelines issued by Cycling BC, which have been approved by BC Health authorities.

Sidney Velo is preparing a Covid-19 Safety Plan for our time trials, incorporating the Cycling BC guidelines, and the key features are:

Online registration only via the ccnbikes.com website for Cycling BC licence holders, who have signed a Covid-19 Declaration.
50-person onsite maximum, including riders, volunteers, and spectators.
2-m physical distancing at all times, except for passing, if the riders’ safety would be in jeopardy. A 1-m passing distance would be acceptable in those instances.
No ride holder at the start.
Self-serve race number pickup, attachment, removal, and return.
Volunteers use gloves for handling all equipment, which is cleaned between weekly use.
Masks to be worn for contact closer than 2 m, or at the volunteer’s discretion if greater than 2 m.
No pre- or post-race gatherings.
Results available only online.

The Tuesday evening time trials would occur weekly in July and August, and the Paskin Cowichan Valley 20-km (for U19) and 40-km time trials would be on a Sunday at noon in either July or August.

We perceive that the cycling community is divided on whether to stage time trials this summer, and we need to know how many of you would be willing to ride and/or volunteer to make it a worthwhile endeavour.

The question is how many of you would ride or volunteer for:

Tuesday Time Trials (perhaps as many as 9 TT’s between July 7 through September 1), How many? Ride__________ Volunteer___________

Paskin Cowichan Valley Time Trial: Ride ________________Y/N Volunteer ________________Y/N

Please respond by June 14th as a club decision will be made on June 15th. No need to respond if you would not ride or volunteer.

Thanks for your help!

Hey folks,

Time Trials will likely be our only racing option this summer. Anyone can race them. It's just you against your last time on the same course. Don't need TT bars, don't need a carbon bike.

It would be fun if a bunch of us turned out. Post here if you're interested in racing or watching/volunteering. I've never raced TT before (except a couple triathlons) but I want to try this summer.

There was a full turnout of 34 riders last Tuesday - July 7. Pent up demand ....

The TT will be going ahead again this Tuesday, July 14. If you're planning on riding or volunteering Larry Pommen of Sidney Velo has posted this update and report ... worth reading before heading out on Tuesday.

Hi, folks. The first Tuesday time trial during Covid-19 on July 7th went reasonably well and riders seemed to enjoy themselves, but we need to increase the PHYSICAL DISTANCING! Please do Sidney Velo (and yourselves) a favour by staying 2 metres away from each other at all times – we invested a lot of time and money to start the time trials and we don’t want to be shut down.

This means staying 2 metres apart riding to the time trial, at the start, during warm-up laps, at the finish, and on the ride home – you are the public ambassadors for our sport.

We had a complaint from a motorist on the Pat Bay Highway, who saw several groups of riders in packs riding within feet of each other, possibly during a warm-up lap. This is a 90 km/h highway with a 2-m shoulder, and riding should be single file, 2 m apart, except to pass.

People were bunching up at the start to read start times, collect race numbers, and socialize, but not always keeping 2-m distance. We had some glitches posting start times/race numbers on http://sidneyvelo.ca/starts/20Starts.htm by 5 PM, which should be fixed next Tuesday.

If at all possible, please look up your start time and race number on-line so that you don’t have to line up read them at the start, and time your arrival at the start so that you are not loitering around the start area for more than 5 to 10 minutes.

People were congregating at the start/finish after their time trials to socialize – we request that you leave the area promptly after finishing your race. We know that socializing is a key tradition of racing, but this is not the time nor place to do it during Covid-19.

We need a start/finish marshal for July 14 and there are many spots to fill in the following weeks. First aid is especially needed. Click this link to volunteer: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090A4BAFAA2EA46-2020.

Thank you for your cooperation; we stuck our necks out for you to start the time trials during a pandemic, now it is time for you to do your part by keeping your 2-m distance and volunteering!
