Knee pain! Any suggestions?

Post by rduncan »

Hi all,

Well the one time in my life I’ve been curling I managed to do something to my knee. It hurts under the kneecap when I put pressure on the pedal and feels crunchy when I bend it in general. I’ve been to Barb at BBphysio once and she did a great job of treating me and I plan on going back but I’d like some input since I’m feeling rather frustrated at the whole situation.

I’ve been off my bike for a week and going a bit stir-crazy and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better with rest. I’ve signed up for some gran fondos and other rides this summer and I really don’t want to impact my training too much. I don’t know if I should just rest or ride more gently. I hurt it a month ago and have been riding but I was definitely sore afterwards.

Have any of you had similar things occur? If so what did you do?

Thanks for your input.

Hey Rob,

Sorry to read about your knee injury.

Google 'deep water running' I've used this before to speed up rehab from some running induced injuries (torn groin, stress fractures, shin splints).

It worked for me, and what I really like about deep water running is 1) it's zero impact, and 2) you can get a great cardio workout, and even run intervals whilst recovering from an injury.

Water is a very powerful healer.

It's still only early March, and the best rides and weather of the year are still quite a few months away.

Heal fast.

What you are describing sound like more than just a sore knee. You should see a doctor, especially if it not getting better with rest.

Not a doctor....at least not a medical one. My knee pain might be completely different from yours. With that in mind, my advise is this: every time you think you are in the right gear, shift once or twice to spin a bit faster. That is, work your heart and lungs more and your knees less. Something else I've done is to go out on the route well ahead of the group - don't bother to meet at the high school. Ride an easy pace until they catch you and then join in. I live very close to Oak Bay High, so maybe this advice is address-specific. The point is not to be pressured into going fast before your knees are ready. Good luck,
