Why do we Sprint on Interurban?

Re: Why do we Sprint on Interurban?
Every group ride in town sprints on Interurban. It's just done.
compete: 1620, from Fr. compéter "be in rivalry with"
Re: Why do we Sprint on Interurban?
Because it is in our nature.
Re: Why do we Sprint on Interurban?
I even sprint to Roy when solo.
I always come last.
I always come last.

That's sad. I've won—decisively!—100% of my solo sprint efforts.Rolf wrote:I even sprint to Roy when solo.

I guess that's why (according to an informal poll I just conducted in my head) everyone thinks I'm awesome.
Re: Why do we Sprint on Interurban?
It's the natural order of things. It's our inescapable destiny to sprint there.
We even sprint there after 250km of the Big Loop Ride. One year Barton called a truce on the Interurban Sprint on the Mill Bay ferry coming back from the Big Loop. He went around to every last person in the group and got them all to agree *NOT to sprint*. I think someone was looking for a needle for people to prick their fingers with. So we get off the ferry, head south at a leisurely pace, proceed sedately down Interurban....remind everyone...NO SPRINT!...everything's looking good...the truce is holding...
Then suddenly, the whoosh of cranks spinning up at the back of the group, a little frame creak, a flash off to the left...Barton attacking from behind. The sprint is on.

Re: Why do we Sprint on Interurban?
And if I recall correctly I ended up at the back of the pack pretty shortly after that brief and vain attempt at glory!
Even Mikael and I will "sprint" in our own fashion at the end of Monday hill work outs when out in that direction.
It is just done! I think part of it is the downhill and lovely swooping curves from the Observatory turn off to Interurban and really cool right hand turn onto Interurban at speed. It is hard to back off from their! But it really has to be done somewhat safely. 4 riders abreast is not such a good idea later on a Sunday morning as pickup trucks come trundling up behind us near Roy.
Barton.

I personally never sprint on Interurban, but according to Strava, there has been 47 569 attempts by 3 101 people. This would of course not include Andrew N. as he does not use "the internet".
