2018 Canadian Masters Championships
There was discussion in another thread about this, but it took me a while to find it and this board seemed more appropriate.
It looks like they've fixed up the categories and start times for the Road Race. The 50-59 Men get to race after all!
Here's the current list of start times:

7:30 am Masters (50-59) Men - 7 Laps 70 km

Re: 2018 Canadian Masters Championships
Is anyone else in the 60 plus age group taking part in the Canadian Master's road race June 2? Last I looked it was 5 laps for the 60+. Same as above.
I read the technical guide this morning and it seems to say 7 laps? Is that how others read this?
Légende / legend
M-A Maître / Master 30-39 Homme / Men
M-B Maître / Master 40-49 Homme / Men
M-C Maître / Master 50-59 Homme / Men
M-D Maître / Master 60 et + Homme / Men
M-E Maître / Master 30-39 Femme / Women
M-F Maître / Master 40 et + Femme / Women
2ième départ course sur route / Second Start – Road Race M-D/E
(7 tours / laps)
M-D 7h38
Same for women 30 +, 7 laps.
Say it ain't so! I have been training physically and in my brain for 5 laps!
Barton.

The Cameron Law website also says 7 laps.

I was planning to although I am barely trained for the 4 laps the 60+ women were supposed to do never mind 7. And you can imagine how pleased I am to now be lumped in with the 40+ category.

Re: 2018 Canadian Masters Championships
I just found out that my little $60 provincial ride license with CBC (no, not the radio station!) is not acceptable for this event. A UCI license is necessary; another $100! If you are taking part in this event and you are not sure if you have the right license, contact CBC, admin@cyclingbc.net.

Re: 2018 Canadian Masters Championships - 50+ women
For all the women planning on racing 50+, you should know that you will be racing in the 40+ category. You might want to take this up with Cycling Canada; the tech guide show awards to 30+ and 40+ categories so despite the rumour that the 50+ women's category has more registrations than the 30+ and 40+ combined, there is no 50+ women's category. There are 50-59 and 60+ categories for the men. Apparently it's something about not having a baseline to work from, so possibly they wait to see what happens this year and maybe have a category next year. This was the case with our amazing COTR series; there was a SuperMasters men, but not for women. When it was pointed out that there were three 50+ women racing the series, the organizers added a SuperMasters category for women for the overall awards. Granted, COTR is a magic series, and cross is always bucking convention, but maybe the 50+ women want to take this example to argue Cycling Canada's arcane sexist and ageist decision. Here's the tech guide, see page 4.

It's changing, today, it appears. 50+ women back in.
Still wonder why they don't just make all the categories the same as men...

Hi Lister,
Up until this year, our "Official" Canadian Masters Road Championships categories for women were the "30-39" and "40+" categories. With that said, we re-evaluated the logic for these categories, and decided to open them up for this year's event, and all subsequent events moving forward. The updated categories are:
30-39 Women
40-49 Women
50+ Women
Our hope is that by adding additional Women’s categories, we will break down any potential participation barriers and work towards boosting overall women’s participation as a result. The Technical Guide currently reflects the “old” categories, but will be updated by day’s end.
Thanks for reaching out, and see you at the event."

Re: 2018 Canadian Masters Championships
Yeah, this one surprised Cross on the Rock riders who got the benefit of racing with the provincial license all year, then were required to buy the more expensive one for provincials. It has definitely hit participation in some categories at provincials the last few years.barton bourassa wrote:I just found out that my little $60 provincial ride license with CBC (no, not the radio station!) is not acceptable for this event. Barton.
I recall the debates. People lobbied, rightly i think, for lower barriers to racing for new and more casual riders. So CBC offer a cheap license to get into the sport, or dabble locally. But it doesn't really reflect the costs of running the sport. And riders training for months for provincials and nationals are not really beginners. It's always exaggerated in the host town, because more people lower on the experience scale go to it mainly because it's close.
CBC decisions are often arguable, but on this one i think it's fair to charge the extra for a license to our biggest events of the year. Compared to the cost of bikes, glasses, kit, computers, etc, it's not very much. And it gives you a 'license' to get involved in lobbying for important stuff like equal categories for women.

Ok Fine! I'll stop grumbling about the changing distance and the cost of participation and just get ready and participate!
Thanks,

Btw, I suggested they save some headaches and make all categories equal for men and women in all disciplines. Feel free to add your voice.Lister Farrar wrote:It's changing, today, it appears. 50+ women back in.

Last we checked, there were only four women total (all cats) signed up for the crit. So no jerseys. Bummer. Where's everyone at?

Re: 2018 Canadian Masters Championships
For riders hesitating about racing, there were a couple comments from new riders today in the Windsor park VCL race that might help you make the leap.
Todd: It looks way scarier from outside the pack than inside. While from the curb, they look like they're flashing by, from inside, everyone is floating around quite manage-ably. (Think inner tubes on the Cowichan river vs Fast and Furious.)
Sheila: 8:25 "I'll just watch today." 40 minutes later: "Arg, i should have raced."
Martin: First criterium of his life and he makes the break of 6, works with them, and laps the field. If Martin can do it, how hard can it be?

Hi all,
Here is a link to the technical guide for the Nationals provided by Jon Watkins:

Might want to take note of the parking restrictions for the road race.

Re: 2018 Canadian Masters Championships
Thanks, Andrew. I just took the plunge and finally signed up for the road race. Somewhere in your link I read that the price goes up soon by $20.00 so anyone who hasn't registered may want to do so soon.

Has anyone thought about carpooling out for the early morning start? I could take two additional people and bikes. I live on Pine St in Vic West. People could even park here and drive out with me or vice versa.
