A couple club members pointed me to the fact that Joe's dad has passed away. He was a larger than life figure in BC's modern history.

It's a little hard to imagine Joe being the son of someone who described himself as "fat li'l Dave" and who is characterized in the article as "blunt" and "combative". I've only seen Joe be combative on really tough hill climbs.
At any rate, Joe, our thoughts are with you and your family.
