Cross bike for Liam?

Post by Lister Farrar »

I'm looking for a 54-56'ish cross bike to borrow Sunday for my son Liam (5'10", 150 lbs). He's a good bike handler and experienced with road and mtb's, and is easy on equipment.

My Santa Cruz Superlight mountain bike will be available for the intermediate race. If you are on good terms with OBB, you might be able to get one of their Norco CCX demo 'cross bikes.

Thanks Roland. He'll do the beginner race I suspect, his friends are doing that one. Though I'm encouraging him to do internediate, beat Geoff Wong, and collect the beer Geoff offered as a bet, for me. If you can't exploit your kids, what can you exploit?

I've offered my touring/cross bike to Carly for the beginners race, but I don't know if she'll want to risk racing. If she doesn't want it, Liam is welcome to borrow it: 54cm, steel, not all that heavy (honest), and its only foible is that the brakes are British-style (front on the right, rear on the left). That doesn't matter though. You don't need brakes for cross. They only slow you down.

Thanks Ian! I'll let you know.

Won't riding the corss race completely blow Carly's classification? I can see her competitiors at Paralympics getting the video and going, WTH?

Jen will ride in front of her with a little bell (and maybe some more advance technology too). And if it goes as well as I expect it might, her competitors at the Paralympics will look at the video and go "Ooh! Ow! Ouch! Oh no! Don't ride into that ditch! Uh-oh. Too late...". No worries about interference with classification!

Seriously, the idea, I think, is to try some sort of guiding with radio mikes. Carly's done it with Morton for the Sidney time trial before, and cross should be almost exactly the same. Apart from the mud. And the corners. And the stairs. And the barriers. I don't think there will be any fire pits on this course, so that's something...

It's a family site. I'm already feeling guilty for the profanity in the youtube posting on volunteers...
