Indian Pacific Wheel Race

Post by roadflasj »

Anyone else following this crazy adventure? 5500km of exciting Australian racing through the barren Nullarbor Plains and Australian Alps. The route begins in Fremantle south of Perth on the western extreme and ends outside the Sydney Opera House on the eastern Pacific front. The participant roster features the fastest ultra racers in world including three time TransContinental winner Kristof Allegaert and renowned distance record holder Mike Hall. To give a small example of their respective cycling pedigrees Kristof averaged 450km per day through mountainous terrain in Europe and in 2016 Mike pedaled about 300km off-road per day on the Tour Divide route.

UPDATE: 24hrs into the race lead rider (Kristof) posted 637km or 411miles. Only 4846km remaining!

Bucket list ride for sure. What a way to see the wild nature and terrain of a country. 400km of headwinds and rain though in the first day of riding.

'Straya!

More detail here.

Far too early to draw conclusions as to cause etc. but I found interesting this blog post on the event page from the evening before Hall's early-morning collision.

Hall and the other race leader Kristoff Allegaert were expected to reach the Sydney Opera House finish the day Hall died. After the two friends and rivals battled it out at the front for days, Belgian Allegaert had put in a monster push the preceding day and it was all or nothing for Hall.

The race was cancelled just a few hours before Allegaert's expected win, following 13 days of 400+K/day. I can't imagine the fatigue and brain-scramble these guys were experiencing.

#RIDEFORMIKE or #BELIKEMIKE have been the tags for hundreds of memorial rides for Mike Hall around the world. Mike was such a shining example of perseverance despite all odds and all conditions. He has been remembered for his open and humble heart and an unsurpassed commitment to growing the sport of ultra endurance cycling. A true loss for cyclists around the world.
