For the first time, I've taken 2 of my cassettes to pieces yesterday to clean them and then I put them back together. 1 of them is fine, so I think we did everything right, but the other one has a plastic spoke protector which now rubs against the spokes - quite a bit. The rubbing starts as soon as I tighten the cassette as hard as I can by hand, not using a wrench, so it's definitely not too tight (Unless I have undiscovered super powers).
Does anybody have some advice on what I could do about this? My plan is to go to the bike shop this evening, but if anybody suggested some things I could try first, I'd appreciate it.
I'm pretty sure those guards usually move with the wheel, not the freehub, and shouldn't be moving relative to the spokes. They usually slide right over the freehub body and sit on the stationary part of the hub body.
Roland, I thought of removing the disk, but I need to go to the bike shop and get another spacer then as the disk contributes to the total depth of the cassette. I tried it without the disk and when I tightened the cassette as much as possible, the chain rings were still loose.
Josh, that would make sense and I wish I looked at the setup of my bike before, but I'm pretty sure that the guard actually spins with the freehub as it sits on the grooved part of the freehub and as I just said, it contributes to the total depth of the cassette. I think it's a bit of a rubbish design.
Josh - I'm pretty sure the disk is the right way around because I tried to put it on the other way but it doesn't fit that way because it is keyed to fit over the hub splines.
Brian - a spacer would be awesome. My guess that the thickness of the disk is about 1mm. Muchas gracias.
What is all this talk about different pieces - that sounds to me like your bike is broken and you need a new one. I can tell you with certainty that each of my bikes is a single piece - if you have more than 1 piece it is clearly broken and you must purchase a replacement.
Don't let the others convince you to carry on with a bike made with such shoddy workmanship - they are just trying to slow you down to take an advantage on the sprints !
Josh - I'll check again, but I'm pretty sure I kept the spacers exactly in the same order. Actually, I think it's impossible to move a spacer to a different place because it would be missing somewhere else. There is also not the space for an additional spacer, e.g. that I lost one when taking it off. It's a bit mysterious.
