UVic ring road out of commission

Post by myboys »

There are signs up at UVic indicating the road work will be continuing until April. Sad.

Beacon Hill is better anyway.

I prefer Beacon Hill too, but that's because it's a 3 minute ride from home.

The major trench on the Ring Road by Business and Economics has been filled in and covered in gravel. So it's improved over yesterday and the past couple weeks. It still looks pretty rough to me...but I'll try to give an update next week.

I like UVic more, personally. While it has a little more people and vehicle traffic, I've seen less animal "traffic" than the peacocks and ducks at BHP. I also like the pre- and post-ride options (Tolmie, Sinclair, Caddy bay) when I have time and motivation. There's also something especially soul-destroying about the head-wind on Dallas as you approach the little hill; the winds at UVic usually aren't that bad.

(I also have to admit that UVic is closer to our home; it's kinda nice to roll out the house at 555 and still get there in time for "hellos" before the first set!)

I have to jump in and back up Greg with a plea to not encourage talk of relocating Thursday TT to Beacon Hill permanently. I am lucky if I make one am ride a week at the moment, and that is about all the BH laps I can take. If Thursday was also there, I might go a little nuts. UVic provides some variety (which we all know is the spice of life and a training program), and as Greg mentioned, geographic versatility. :D

I would agree with the Fennel family on this one, the Thursday UVIC team time trial belongs at ..... UVIC. Besides, we do not want to contribute to anybody having their soul destroyed or going nuts.

There is also science behind the appropriateness of UVIC; we ride it counter clockwise. An incomplete list of activities conducted this way:

Track and Field
Speed skating
Track cycling
Roller Derby
Horse racing
Greyhound racing
The Chariot race in Ben Hur
Merry-go-rounds
The typical direction of skaters at a rink
NASCAR

and if you are still not convinced:

The normal direction nearly everybody spins a hula hoop!

So you see Greg, if we rode Beacon Hill the PROPER way you would have a confidence building tailwind on Dallas most days!

Assuming we will continue to meet at Beacon Hill temporarily for the TTT, we can look forward to the ring road returning to normal. Condition updates are welcome Martin!
