It was a really good ride! In spite of the rain, Laura and Louise P showed up at the coffee shop just before 7 and off we went. We picked up Penny then Roxanne along the way. I thought to myself this is interesting; where are all the men? Oh yeah, right! They heard the pitter patter of rain and immediately went back to sleep!
Pretty early on it was clear that Laura and Louise were strongest of the bunch. When we got to Royal Oak and Lochside we started our backwards rotation. The front rider sets the pace, the back rider watches the clock and at 2 minutes zips up to the front, tucks in and resumes the pace. L & L and Roxanne did 2 minute pulls while Penny and I pulled for 1 minute. This worked really well until Landsend when Roxanne started feeling the effects of 2 1/2 hours of riding in the rain! Wet and cold, we kept going but adjusted Roxanne's pulls to 1 minute.
There was one stop to refuel and to get a cup of hot water into Roxanne then off for the last 40 K in relatively dry weather.
100 K in 3:43 and 26.9 K/Hr. I tell you, this backwards pace line thing worked well.
Next week, back out to Metchosin & East Sooke for more hills!
To Mary and anyone else running the Gunner Shaw, have fun!!

Sorry we missed you Barton!
Heather and I had our alarms set to meet you, but (as you said) we heard the rain, and went back to sleep. Did get 85 km in later in the mostly dry. Maybe 1 hour of drizzle. Colder than two weeks ago though. Winter's settling in!
See you all tomorrow!
