July 24 Vancouver Triple Crown

There was brave talk (idle chatter?) this morning at coffee about getting a group to drive up to Nanaimo, park, and take bikes on the ferry over to North Van to ride the Triple Crown (as a day trip). Anyone interested? Perhaps in July between Hurricane Ridge and the Big Loop Ride?

I am interested, depending on the weekend.

Will take a bit of planning, but suggest taking the 7:45am ferry from Nanaimo (arriving at 9:45am), and returning on the 5:45pm. That will give us a comfortable amount of time to complete the ride and have a pint or two before the ferry ride hom.

I'm in for July 24th if that's an option on the table. Having ridden a few Nanaimo departure cycling trips I would highly recommend the 6:20am ferry time. Far less traffic to start riding and much cooler climbing Cypress first thing in the morning. When Barton and I went up it was already quite warm despite the early hour.

Did you have an estimate for total distance/moving time? A quick search noted almost 50km from the top of Seymour back to the ferry terminal.

I believe it is around 100km. July 24th works for me, though I will already be in Vancouver, so will miss out on the excitement of taking ferry.

My suggestion is to start with riding out to Seymour (consider it your warm up) and finishing with Cypress. Seymour is steeper, and from my experience, the harder of the two.

Just my two cents.

If we ride out to Seymour first then we would be commuting through the early day traffic, definitely my preference to avoid the busy roads.

I can help you.
I did the Vancouver Triple Crown ride last summer,solo..(some Vancouver riders call it the 3 peaks ride.)

I was already in Vancouver.....From city hall area and back it was about 120km. I was out for 9 hrs and rode about 6 hrs. Some of you would do it faster.....my trip included stops at Mcdonalds, 2 coffee stops, lunch at Grouse and A & W on the way home....
A true p.c. ride...

I did Seymour first.Grouse .then Cypress.
The logistically challenging part is getting from one to another. I am not a strava or gps guy. I had a paper map which worked well.

Depending on the date and the planned pace I may do it again..I would suggest 2 groups for safety and to keep B3 riders like me, happy when attempting the 3 peaks with A1 and A2 riders.

July 24 works for me. There's a Windsor Park Crit that day, but if people are willing to miss that, then let's plan on it.

Looks like there's a daily 6:20 departure from Nanaimo which would get us into North Van at 8:00am. A number of people have suggested doing Seymour first, as it's the furthest and hardest climb. So we'd get in a good warmup riding over to it.

We'll need cars with racks to get people up there. I can drive, and take a total of 3 bikes on my rack.

Depending on who's going, we can sort out riding groups or just stick together as a single group. While people may want to ride the hills at their own pace, it will probably make sense to regroup at the tops and bottoms of hills and ride together between hills.

I think Blair's going to work on a proposed route on Strava.

Hi Geoff. Are you referring to the journey up Grouse? I was wondering how far we can get on pavement? Does it turn to gravel part way up? I have never been up there.

traditional 'Triple Crown' climbs only to the Grouse Mtn parking lot. No gravel, just the easiest up and back of the 3.

Unless there's a groundswell to the contrary, I suspect the default for this ride will be pavement only. However, if a couple others are interested in doing it on bigger tires, I'll bring my gravel grinder. A subset of the group could throw in the top of Grouse, though it might mean separating from the rest of the group for the second half of the ride.
