Bicycle Meditations
Researching for an article on mindfulness I came across a site on "Bicycle Meditations" (I'm not making this up) and there was a great way to think of how to respond to truck-driving meatheads that roar by us at 6am telling us to get off the road. Here's a link: http://www.bicyclemeditations.org/road.html
As it says: The crude, words, "Get off the f***ing road" can be understood as "Enjoy yourself as you and the road make beautiful love together".
And when people flip us the single middle finger? We've seen that salute a few times out on the roads, haven't we?
The mudra of the single upraised digit is a reminder of this oneness: unity in Christ Consciousness, being at one with the Tao, La illaha Il' Allah, Adonai Echad. Thus, when someone makes this gesture at you, you should understand that they are wishing you the experience of this ecstatic union.

Re: Bicycle Meditations
Some days I envy your vocation, Alan. Today is not one of them.
Re: Bicycle Meditations
I just smile and think of the extra gas tax revenues generated when the pickups scream around us, pedal to the metal. Economist nirvana.

Rolf, or can I call you 'Grasshopper'? One must cultivate 'acceptance' and 'mindfulness' if you want to find the 'true' way....
Yet enough of that shite. I'm at the Association of Healthcare Journalists Conference in Cleveland, trying to research (and practice) mindfulness amid the chaos that is involved in reporting on the US healthcare system. I'm surrounded by about 600 other healthcare writers and journalists who are trying to hone their craft in reporting on what is arguably the most unequal healthcare system in the developed world.
Want to talk terrorism? I've seen it. Lots of "Gee Whiz" presentations about new diagnostic imagery and genetic probing, with the backdrop being a country in which a sizeable proportion of the population live in fear of bankruptcy if a cancer diagnosis, heart scare or car accident darkens their lives.
Never mind ISIS, fear a cancer screening that throws up an 'anomaly'.
We need to thank our lucky stars we live in Canada and not in the US.
Lots of stories to tell next time we're pedalling side by side, Grasshopper.

Careful Alan. You will have NSA closely monitoring the Tripleshot Site. I am sure the bots are going ballistic with a site named "Tripleshot" sounding off on terrorism and the inequality of the US healthcare system, ISIS and living in Canada vice the US.

Not to mention posting how-to videos about "snot-rockets". D'oh!sailor wrote:I am sure the bots are going ballistic with a site named "Tripleshot" sounding off on terrorism...
Seriously though, I'm more concerned about the fact that Alan is writing an article about "mindfulness". Can additional missives on "wellness" and "truthiness" be far behind?

Re: Bicycle Meditations
I wouldn't worry too much about that Alan. Trumps gonna sort em, and make Merica great again
Re: Bicycle Meditations
A few of us have lived it. The differences between Canada and the US go far beyond "zee vs zed" and politeness, especially in the medical system; I'm still not quite adjusted to this "just show me your card" simplicity, lack of outrageous bills, and lack of mind-bendingly illogical co-pays. The simple fact that you go to a hospital in the US knowing you're probably going to have pay something but have no idea the cost of the service you're getting until AFTER should make the entire country outraged, but it doesn't. Mind you, everyone gets outraged when they're over-charged $10 at the auto shop, Starbucks, or by a general contractor, but generally accept $1000's in bills for medical care (regardless if they pay or insurance kinda/sorta pays) as a fact of life.Alan wrote:Rolf, or can I call you 'Grasshopper'? Alan. If we were a cult (and some non -cyclists may think that we are).... you would be our spiritual guru and primary teacher. If you chose an assistant guru...I think Rolf or Steve Lund would be leading candidates.
