Right off the top: Big, huge thanks to the B3 Crew this morning for stopping, on a gorgeous riding morning, to help me fix my flat. The tube survived to coffee, and then home after that. It's refreshing and inspiring to be part of a group that is so supportive of each other, and the B3 Crew lived up to that standard today.
Reflecting back, it was a bit of a perfect storm. I woke up this morning and realized I forgot to charge my lights last night. I thought "That's not good. Well, I'll head out anyways. Maybe the lights will last until sunrise". Incorrect assumption. My front light burned out on Blenkinsop (probably the worst possible spot). I next thought "Well, everyone else has their lights on. There should be enough ambient light to get me through Blenkinsop and Mt. Douglas park". Again, incorrect assumption. I just got to the front of the paceline and came up on that pothole. I saw it just before I hit it. I managed to swerve a wee bit, but still caught the side of the pothole. Why did I not see it sooner? My light was burned out. My bike seemed to be rolling fine, so I thought "Disaster averted". Incorrect assumption. Just before Ash Road my rear tire went flat. Thankfully there are a couple of streetlights in that area to complete the repair. Also, thankfully I was riding with "Good Eggs" to speed up the repair.
Lesson of the day: Remember to charge my lights before riding.
The good news: I snapped a stunning picture of the sunrise.
