Barton's Hilly 100

Post by mtsmith439 »

I am planning on doing Barton's Hilly 100 this Saturday.
I was thinking about leaving from downtown around 6 or 7am.
Just throwing out an invitation in case anyone is interested.
I plan on averaging about 26km/hr, with the focus more on cranking up my August elevation total than pace. Details are in the following link. It's more or less wandering around the highlands for 3 hours. Barton: I hope you don't mind me sharing.

Share away but I think you will be closer to 4 hours than 3!

LOL!
To clarify: My 3 hours did not include riding out there and riding back. It just included the "wandering" part.
Maybe I'm being optimistic. It's in my nature.
Cheers,
Mark

Is there a departure time/place? I might be in for this.

There hasn't been a lot of takers on this ride. LOL
I was just going to leave from my house in James Bay, cross the Blue Bridge, past Cafe Fantastico, hit the goose, peel off on Interurban, and let the fun begin.
Where are you coming from Martin?
I would be totally cool with meeting at the Alpha Starbucks. That would be another option, and always a popular choice.

Mark

My apologies.
I totally forgot time.
6am from James Bay.
6:30am if we make it the Alpha Starbucks.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Sorry--missed this before I headed to bed. I'm going to give the Sufferfest a try (the words "relaxed tempo" in their post catch my attention as I wipe my bleary eyes). That *might* mean I can hang in for more than 20 mins. Hope I haven't messed with your plans!

No worries Martin.
You didn't mess with my plans at all.
Good luck with the Sufferfest Crew! You are a good man for even giving it a go.
I hope some day I will get to that point.
Cheers,
Mark

I have to tip my hat to Barton.
"Barton's Hilly 100" certainly lived up to it's name.
It was flat on the way out, and flat on the way back, but that was about it. In between, I was either going uphill or downhill, and (another tip of the hat) the middle section was closer to 4 hours then 3 hours. When I'm wrong, I admit I'm wrong. Barton: Yes. I was being too optimistic.
Surprise of the day: The Willis Point Climb. I had never biked out to Willis Point before. Starting my ride yesterday morning, I had in my head that the two toughest climbs of the day would be Observatory and Munn's Road. I never even thought about Willis Point. Well, that quickly changed. Descending down to Willis Point, the thought popped into my head "I've been going down a LONG time ... and that means ... I need to climb back out of this hole I'm digging for myself!". And climb out I did. I was riding back to West Saanich and I was thinking "Whew! Thank goodness Willis Point is done ... hold on a second ... I need to do that beast again, at the end of the ride!". The second time was a bit ragged but I survived.
Final Numbers: 107km, 1800m elevation, 23km/hr
That was my final "Tough One" before I start tapering for the Whistler Gran Fondo. I feel prepared. I feel I've spent enough time in the saddle. I feel confident. It has been a heck of a month for riding.
I would like to thank the club for challenging me to test my limits as a cyclist. No one presented that challenge directly. It was more laid out there in an organic way. The spirit of friendly competition that is such a part of the culture and fabric for the club. Thank you for that.
Cheers,
Mark

I had exactly the same thought descending to Willis Point the first time I did it (earlier this year). Barton--of course--was leading the way. ;)
