TSC Sponsored Hurricane Ridge Ride, Aug 16
Again this year TSC is sponsoring and supporting an attack on Hurricane Ridge! We will catch the 6:10 Black Ball Ferry on August 16 and head over to Port Angeles. We will have a support vehicle that will have water, electrolytes, a bit of food, repair kit for flats and such, a first aid kit, a bike rack for emergencies and a driver to cruise up and down the hill making sure everyone ok. You can put extra cycle clothing for the decent and a change of clothes for the journey home in the truck.
It looks like the total cost including park entrance fees and exchange rate will be +- $70 Canadian. The cost to you is $40 Canadian with the club picking up the balance (for paid up and registered club members only. Non club members are welcome to join us but they are their own for ferry tickets and park entrance fee. Club members please register and pay at:
http://bikehart.com/cart/index.php?main ... ucts_id=53
This way we know how many tickets to purchase. I will purchase all tickets the day before we go and be at the ferry terminal early the 16th to distribute them.
Most folks come back to Victoria on the 12:45 boat. A few of us will likely stay and either attempt to go back up HR again or go long and flat catching the 5:20 PM boat home and make a whole day of it.
This is a ride that any of our club members can do. You just settle in to a nice steady pace and work your way up the hill.
If you have any questions please contact me.
Barton.

Just a friendly reminder to get yourself some medical travel insurance for the day.
Re: TSC Sponsored Hurricane Ridge Ride, Aug 16
I am not (yet) a paid club member but would love to ride the Ridge with the gang. I am still on the fence about officially joining, as I will likely transition back to running soon. If I'm not yet a member, do you still want me to sign up for the ride? Will I have the option to stow some minor gear in the vehicle? Or am I totally on my own as a non-member? I know, I know... I should just sign up, right? LOL.

HI Claire. Anyone can join us. Just show up at the ferry terminal with your bike and other gear. You will pay your own ferry and park entrance fee. You can store your extra gear in the vehicle once we get off the ferry at Port Angeles.
Cheers!

It does seem to be broken, I will see what I can do..Hugh
Re: TSC Sponsored Hurricane Ridge Ride, Aug 16
The shopping carts database server is still down.
If you have paid for the Hurricane ridge ride already you are good to go. If you still want to go but have not paid, post here so Barton knows you are coming. Barton will likely buy the tickets on Saturday and post an update here.
Thanks
Hugh

As of Aug 6 this is the list of those coming:
Tim Gijzen
Mik Vahi
Paul Christopher
Richard Trudeau
Brad Zarikoff
Ased Said
Barton Bourassa
If you have registered online please add your name to this list.
If you want to go but cannot get online to register, start a new list here:
And bring $40 with you to the ferry terminal.
A couple things about the trip. We will have a vehicle to bring your stuff up to the top of the Ridge. Weather is forecast at a high of 16 C. It will be cool coming down. Jacket and gloves might be necessary.
The support vehicle will travel up and down the climb until the last rider is at the top. If you need anything wave them down. If you don't see the vehicle, call 250 507 7107 and they will come find you.
If you don't want to cycle down you can get a ride down with the support vehicle to the ferry terminal. We will have a bike rack and room for three passengers.
Make sure to you have blinky lights for the front and back of your bike. They are required for the tunnels.
We will have water, Nuun, bananas, a few energy bars. There is a cafeteria and washrooms at the top of the climb.
It is likely the support vehicle will stay for the day. The support vehicle will be at the ferry terminal for the 12:45 sailing with all of your gear.
Additional travel medical insurance is a great idea!!
See you Sunday, 5:30 AM at the Blackball Ferry!
Barton.

Barton: I signed up online on Wednesday evening because 9 Hurricane Ridge ascents in one year is not enough.
As far as I know, the list should be as follows but when I signed up I think the store indicated I was the eleventh participant so there might be 2 or 3 missing from the list depending on whether Martin paid before or after me.
Tim Gijzen
Mik Vahi
Paul Christopher
Richard Trudeau
Brad Zarikoff
Ased Said
Barton Bourassa
Martin Farnham
Marcus Gill

Re: TSC Sponsored Hurricane Ridge Ride, Aug 16
Great day today! 16 of us headed off and climbed! Devon and Mary watched over us with care! No crashes, no mechanical issues and everyone made it to the top and back again. And a beautiful day! A bit cool coming down. And hot going up again after lunch! Five of us stayed for the afternoon. Mark, Paul and Louise P went long and flat after lunch. Martin and I headed back up, from the water. The journey up to the park gate really did not seem so bad the second time! With just under 6 K to go to the top and Martin dragging me up I hit 3000 m of climbing for the day and thought seriously about just turning around! Martin expressed no such thoughts and was completely ignorant of my unspoken inner struggle so onward, forward, upward! And yes we made it! 3,355 m of climbing over 135 k for the day. Very cool and so much fun and so much pain!
It was a great day, a great ride and great company. Thanks very much to TSC for their sponsorship and support of this event. Get it on you calendar for next year; third Sunday in August!
Barton.

Re: TSC Sponsored Hurricane Ridge Ride, Aug 16
I'm in agreement.
It was a tough but glorious day on Sunday.
It started with a gorgeous sunrise, viewed from the Coho, while leaving Victoria.
Barton got everyone organized in Port Angeles.
It was the perfect temperature for riding up. Some went faster, some (like me) went slower, but that is what it's all about. As Barton said in a previous post, it's about finding a pace that works for you and working your way up the hill.
It was a tough climb, but the feeling at the top is unbelievable. Especially on a morning like Sunday. It was clear blue skies as far as you could see, and the views were jaw dropping.
I found the descent equally as hard. Like Barton, I found it cool in spots. I also found that my shoulders started to lock up near the bottom. It was probably a poor technique thing. I must have been gripping the bars too tightly out of shear terror.
At the bottom, we celebrated with a cool libation, and then some bid farewell on the ferry and some just kept on riding.
I would also like to extend a huge thanks to Devon and Mary: You are super-fantastic for volunteering to support the riders! Also, a big thanks to Barton for handling all the small details behind the scenes. The day unfolded seamlessly.
This was my first time riding up Hurricane Ridge. I would recommend it to everyone. It is an amazing experience. The tagline for the Detroit Marathon used to be "You Can Do This!". It certainly applies to this outing.
