Looking for a kid's bike

Stephane, have you considered a 24" cyclocross bike? There are some good ones on the market, and a growing # of used ones. I think Giant and Kona both make a good quality and affordable 24".

You'll be in it for longer, and it's a very versatile bike, good for both road and cyclocross for the inevitable absorption into the Tripleshot Youth Group...
