I've been thinking of getting this toy for some time and the thing that has been holding me back is the cost. If anyone has a used one for sale, shoot me a line.

The Power tap hub-type power metre is cheaper and has been recommended to me for junior use because you can share it among riders easily, something you can't do with a crank meter. The recent versions all talk to devices like garmins. Downsides include if its built into a training wheel, you don't have power meter in race wheels, and vice versa.
One view is that the main use for new users is determining training intensities, which after a while you become pretty accurate at estimating. Pros though, use them to even out their pace in TTs and evaluate their abilities in key race moments. For eg, keeping their wattge down on climbs, up on descents. And after a cross wind stage of the tour, Cavendish reported higher wattage in the crossing the gap to the break, than he did for winning the sprint at the end.
