Is anyone having speed issues with Garmin computers? I have one that reads the correct speed for a few seconds then displays one half the correct speed for several seconds then displays one third the correct speed then displays the speed as zero before reading the speed correctly again all of which makes me feel rather slow. It has a crack in the display and the on off switch is wearing out so I bought a new one that does the exact same thing with respect to speed display which makes me think there is an issue with satellite reception. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Do you have an ANT+ speed/cadence sensor? I've noticed when I use mine I get wacky speeds sometimes, if I just use satellite I'm ok.
What are you doing with the broken Garmin?

Check the batteries in your speed/cado sensor...
I used to know mine was dying when the Garmin would helpfully start auto-pausing on the way up Ash, as the failing sensor would hand speed calculations off to the GPS, which, being less precise, would sometimes assume I'd stopped altogether and pause the watch.
How embarrassing.

Kate, if you or anyone has trouble with these Garmins, I have two old digital watches with no wrist straps that you can crazy glue to your carbon handlebar stems. Black to match most bikes.
I just re-glued one to my good summer bike and it works like a charm.
Also if you go sans Garmin, in leau of your GPS, I have a plastic compass I bought at a dollar store that is glued to my CX bike. I can only lend this out as I need it on the 2nd Sunday of every month for the GG rides.
One more thing. For those not on Strava and doing the festive 500,December 24 to 31, along with Mark Ford, Peter ,myself and hopefully YOU..... at 7/11 you can get a map of the CRD and a felt pen. Just sayin!

Re: Garmin 500
Thanks Roland and Kate. Problem solved and I almost feel faster already. Roland I think I should keep the old one as a back-up unless you or someone else wants to buy it for a modest sum ($40). It still works but is showing its age (4 years).
