There's a new cycling app up developed by some geographers at UVic (including a friend of mine). It's called bikemaps.org
Here's their "About us" blurb:
At BikeMaps we love biking as much as we love maps! Our goal is to map your cycling experience to make biking safer. You know your local cycling trouble spots and we want you to map them. Your knowledge of cycling safety, hazards, and even bike thefts will be analyzed using GIS and statistics to identify hot spots of cycling safety, risk, and crime. We are constantly updating our maps and technology, so send us feedback. And stay tuned for updated safety maps generated from YOUR biking experience.

They compile data from various sources (including user inputs and Strava). So an individual user can look at a map of the city and their bike routes, see where accidents tend to occur, and read details of road hazards. I believe they're planning to partner with local governments to use this crowd-sourced information to address hazards more quickly and better serve the local cycling community (with a heavy focus on bicycle commuters).
Those of you who ride with other clubs might consider spreading the word on other club fora. This sort of thing works best when it's widely used. If we use this, we may find some of those nasty winter potholes get fixed a bit quicker.
