This should be interesting and fun. My buddy Bruce Grierson is in town for an event organized by Chris Watt, called the “The Science of Optimal Aging” on June 26th at 7:00PM at UVIC.
From 7:00 to 9:00PM - author Bruce Grierson will share the story of most remarkable 94 year old athlete on the planet and what she can teach us about healthier aging followed by a panel discussion and audience conversation on this fascinating topic!
The panel will include:
· Visiting author Bruce Grierson, of "What Makes Olga Run", in which he explores what the wild success of a ninety-four-year-old track star can tell us about how our bodies and minds age. Canadian Olga Kotelko is not your average ninety-four-year-old. She not only looks and acts like a much younger woman, she holds over twenty-three world records in track and field, seventeen in her current ninety to ninety-five category. Convinced that this remarkable woman could help unlock many of the mysteries of aging, Grierson set out to uncover what it is that’s driving Olga. He considers every piece of the puzzle, from her diet and sleep habits to how she scores on various personality traits, from what she does in her spare time to her family history.
· Dr. Martin Collis has been at the forefront of fitness and healthy living throughout his academic life. His career has been devoted in part to exploring how people can live not only longer but better- healthier, happier, and more fulfilled. He has a PhD in exercise Physiology from Stanford University. He wrote the first North American book on employee fitness and has written books on lifestyle, weight management and walking. He was a leader in the use of pedometers to support daily walking, and was part of the team that created PAR-Q—used worldwide as a screening device for people entering an exercise program.
· John Crouch is a well-known local athlete and writer and author of the newly published "Six Highways to Home"- the account of his 2500 km solo bike trip from Whitehorse to Victoria at age 70.He has written three successful guidebooks on exploring our beautiful region by walking, hiking and biking. He was editor for ten years of the professional medical journal, the BC Massage Practitioner and was founding editor of Island Runner magazine. He has also worked with CBC Radio promoting walking and hiking in the Victoria area.John's physical and athletic pursuits embrace a number of disciplines.
· Dr. Suzanne Montemuro is a highly-regarded Victoria-based family doctor and the former director of the North Shore Menopause Information Centre in Vancouver. She has had a long-standing interest in the management of aging issues and specifically mid-life and late-life women's issues. Suzanne is a model of active, healthy aging herself; she's a wife, mother, grandmother, and physician but she still finds time to devote to her twin passions of golf and downhill skiing.
